View Full Version : What's your favorite band?

I decided to do this thread because I decided that it would be fun. My favorite band has to be "The Ramones", old school, yes, but, they created a new form Rock & Roll, and rocked until 1996, even though they started in the 1970's.
My favorite song:
We're A Happy Family
Reason: It's hilarious and true at the same time about Druggie and Alcholic families.
Lyrics:
We're a happy family
We're a happy family
We're a happy family
Me mom and daddy

Sitting here in Queens
Eating refried beans
We're in all the magazines
Gulpin' down thorazines

We ain't got no friends
Our troubles never end
No Christmas cards to send
Daddy likes men

Daddy's telling lies
Baby's eating flies
Mommy's on pills
Baby's got the chills

I'm friends with the President
I'm friends with the Pope
We're all making a fortune
Selling Daddy's dope

(Repeat)

Sitting here in Queens
Eating refried beans
We're in all the magazines
Gulpin' down thorazines

We ain't got no friends
Our troubles never end
No Christmas cards to send
Daddy likes men

(Repeat)
We're a happy family
We're a happy family
We're a happy family
Me mom and daddy

We're a happy family
We're a happy family
We're a happy family
Me mom and daddy

Well Jerry Lee Lewis is a favorate. Once while he was playing at Harrah's Lake Tahoe in the casino bar years ago, a woman from one of those "gambler specials" with a purse full if nickel's somehow got up to the stage, which took alot of intention as it was the midnight show and full all around the bar, and started banging her purse on the stage while he was in the middle of "Great Balls of Fire". He said something to the effect of "get out of here" but she would'd leave just kept screaming vulger comments to him. Finally, he got up went to the end of the stage where she was screaming and decked her right in the head knocking her flat on her ass. Then, went right back to the piano and finished "Great Balls of Fire". Intense. I think he even did the next show. Harrahs banned him for a few years after that but eventually he was playing their big room with full priviledges.

I used to be a fan of Modern Christian music until I realized the lyrics to the song didn't really make sense to me. I like the old hymns better, they're straight foward and right to the point. Plus, they sound good.

You ought to check out ApologetiX -- they're really good. They take recognized songs and parody them, with a Christian spin. I have almost all of their CD's! It's neat to hear the familiar songs with words that speak spiritually instead of worldy.

Let me be Frank, and you can be Bob, too. I still will cry at any version of "Amazing Grace". I don't know what gets to me about that song, I was in tears while watching the movie "Amazing Grace". I even got emotional listening to the Rock & Roll version of it.

Well in a way it's an easy question, as the Moody Blues are far and away my favorite band. But I like other bands almost as much, such as: Jethro Tull, The Doors, Yes, The Who, and many more. But I also like some hard stuff like AC/DC, Metallica, Alice in Chains, etc.
But I like many kinds of music, some of which many people find surprising. I like Classical music, especially pipe organ music, and especially that composed by Bach. My favorite organist is E. Power Biggs. I also like Gregorian Chants. I have most or all of the CDs done by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos.

Scorpions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scorpions_%28band%29)

By no means the only band or even style of music I like, but you did ask who was my favorite. :smirky:

I think Scorps imprinted on me because they were at their biggest (in the US) right about the time of my Senior year of High School, and I associate their music with a lot of good memories from my youth.

I love the Ramones too btw, I had a cd of theirs once (no idea where it went) that used to have about 30 songs of theirs on it. None were over 2 minutes long, heh. I read once that when they started out, they believed that they were such bad musicians that they figured if they just played fast enough, noone would notice, so.. that's just what they did. Even so, their songs are very catchy. I challenge anyone to listen to Blitzkrieg Bop or Rock n' Roll High School without starting to tap their feet.

Other than the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, my favorite band has been and still is Tangerine Dream.

Tangerine Dream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangerine_Dream) is best known for the music in the movie "Risky Business." They have made some GREAT albums, and done some really awful work. Their peak seemed to be between about 1985 and 2000.

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/4145BM1HM6L._AA240_.jpg

My all-time favorite is a rare album called "Oasis." Every work on that album is just great. Remarkably, the music which most effectively evokes the American West for me is performed by three geeky Germans with a synthesizer.

"Tyranny of Beauty" is my second favorite, and has the single best work I have heard from them, a pulse-pounding rework of "Stratosfear."

"Optical Race," "Lily on the Beach," and "Melrose" were all excellent. "Hyperborea" is older, but quite good.

Xavier Cugat

Cugat is not remembered well enough. He had some outstanding Mambos: Besame Mucho, Jalousie, Cumparsita, Siboney, and lots of others.

His ex-wife Charo has a reputation for being a top-flight Flamenco guitarist, but is better known for her flamboyant clowning. I think she is still alive, but I don't know whether she still performs.

More on what I like-
I like Metallica, but nothing beats the black album with the snake on the cover. That album is full of hits. Their cover of Bob Seeger's "Turn the Page" is quite good too.
The same goes for Pearl Jam. Nothing beats their album called Ten. That one is full of hits. I don't like much of their music from their other albums, with the exception of their recent cover of The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me". That's quite good.
Also there are many, many bands of which I only like one, two or three of their songs.
Iron Butterfly is another good band, and ZZ Top, The Eagles, and I could go on and on...

"Rock, rock, rock-and-roll high school"... or "Labotomy!"- Yes, always liked the Ramones.
Really hard to pick out a favorite. A lot of good ones were already mentioned.
My tastes vary greatly- from classical guitar instrumentals, to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton. Always dug The Stray Cats and now the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Billy Squier is also an all time favorite.
Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and nearly anything else Mike Patton does. Definitely my favorite singer. I think his cover of "Easy" is way better than the Commodores.

Lately the heavier the better. Never been much of a fan of Cookie Monster metal, but I've been a fan of Celtic Frost since the 80's, and lately I'm really getting into Killswitch Engage and Static X. Probably two of my most listened to at the moment.
I never liked rap at all, but I really like Stuck Mojo, especially "I'm American" and "Open Season".
Country western just, for some reason, makes me angry. But I love the lyrics of Charlie Daniels.

Just for fun, let me go through your list and see what I come up with. I've never heard of Suicidal Tendencies and Corrosion of Conformity. Metallica I like, especially the album with the black cover with the snake on it. I've heard of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Tool and Depeche Mode, but I don't know their music because it's not played on the classic rock stations that I listen to. Of course I like Zep and Floyd a lot. The Police I like, but I'm not their biggest fan. And finally Rush. Their stuff is played on the radio all the time, but I'm not a huge fan. I think the lead singer's high voice is kinda weird.

By the way, who was it that recently did their own cover of The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me"? Was it Pearl Jam? They really did an amazing job with that song. If I weren't listening carefully I might think it was actually The Who's original version of the song. When I get my computer back I will have to look for that song on Bear-share.

YESSSS! Suicidal is definitely an all time top 10 favorite! Mike's spin off into Infectious Grooves is also excellent.
I remember a lot of good bumps, bruises, fat lips and black eyes from those concerts. Great fun back then.
COC rocks too.
Never liked Rush. Fantastic musician's, just never liked them.
Zeppelin. Yes.
Maiden. Of course.
Priest. Not so much.
The Police. Never liked 'em.
Tool. Nope.
Floyd. Some of their songs.
Depeche Mode? Hmmm... to each their own I guess.

Basically loved 80's metal for the most part. Hated most of the 90's. Man, Seattle grunge just sucked.

My current playlist is posted on my MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/cerebralcatharsis).
