View Full Version : (Homework) What Makes You Scared?

I have to do this stupid Creative Writing thing that I signed up for, because I thought it was fun. Well, I have homework. The homework is to get feedback from your readers on what they like and don't like in a piece of fiction. The teacher said that to fit into your genre.
Okay, since I write horror I have to ask questions that relate to Horror:
-What makes you scared?
-What doesn't make you scared?
I know I'm a jerk for saying this, but, please don't respond with "I'm afraid of Democrats winning the White House" or "I'm afraid of seeing Hillary naked".
This is a Homework assignment, not a political piece. Please, actually respond with what your are afraid of. I'm not talking about real stuff. I'm talking about, well, let me set up a situation.
You're lying in bed, suddenly, you hear something drop downstairs. Immediatly you start thinking, "it's a robber" or "it's a kidnapper", yet, you don't get out of bed. Are the sounds coming from downstairs your imagination or is it reality?
I'm doing this on this website because everybody else bailed on me, and I need at least seven responses that are logical. I have to have this done by Tuesday, September 4th.
So, respond, if you wish to.

Not knowing what's near.
Kind of difficult to explain, it would be sort of like swimming in the ocean. I'm not afraid of the water, not afraid of deep water or anything like that. But not knowing what could be swimming right below me.
If it were somewhere clear, like the Caribbean, where you could see the bottom in 30 and 40 feet of water, I would have no problem. But it's where you can't see the boundaries that scare me.

Nothingness. There are a few forms only one of which truly terrifies me, so I'll try to elaborate.
First, imagine if you will that you wake up one day and step outside. There is nothing left, no people, no buildings, just an endless desert like wasteland, but its not hot, not cold, not too dark, not too bright, its kind of like you just stepped into limbo and you know its like that everywhere. This isn't the type that bothers me. I call this the wasteland or limbo existence depending on the situation.
The second is beyond known existence. This has 2 forms, beyond known space, and beyond known time. From a fictional standpoint, this would be either traveling beyond the expanses of the universe or perhaps getting stuck between known realities. Or it could be traveling in time beyond the end of time where nothing exists.
The third would be nonexistence. Pretty straightforward, just imagine if one day God hit the almighty undo button and everything ceased to exist, now thats a terrifying thought.
Finally, its a bit more difficult to explain but its probably the most terrifying to me of all, would be imagine falling into the ocean, and sinking, only your sinking eternally because nothing exists where you would land. Another example if you have played any 3d video games that have been bugged where you "clip" through a wall and you keep falling and falling and falling until you reset the game. Don't know why but this bothers me the most. I can still remember having childhood dreams where I was falling through something eternally, usually when I was sick, and I'd wake up in a cold sweat.

Me too, sort of. Here's my take. I had to have emergency surgery some years ago, and of course I was put under. When I woke up it was the most terrifying experience of my life because I simply could not account for the missing time, the nothingness of the time-period during the surgery. I don't know how to explain it better, but it was sheer terror for me.

I'm scared of that feeling you get when hear or see something and you're trying to figure out if it's your imagination or not. I think I developed this fear when my brother used to make up stories and scare the hell out of me when I was three, the stories were mainly about what happens in the darkness.
For some reason, I didn't fear the Boogeyman when I was three. I was more afraid of ghosts, dead things, and many other things that I can't remember.
I think our fears are devoleped at a young age, and when you get older, something in your brain clicks and you start feeling terror. It's just a guess from my expierences.
