September eleventh has now become just another day and America has become just another country.

The flags that waved so proudly on our cars are in tatters now, the promises we made are discarded like some old New Years resolution. Assaulted by a barrage of insults from major news media ranging from insulting our troops, our country and our people no one bothers to watch the news much any more. Patriotism is passé and shame of country is now the going thing, one has to wonder if this is what it felt like just a few years after Pearl Harbor? People have settled back into their routines, go to work, go home, watch TV, go to bed, and go back to work. No longer do they pause just to look one more time at their spouses just in case that memory is all they have left, there is no time to play catch on the front lawn with the kids and that bike you were going to teach Johnny to ride is still in its box.

On September the eleventh we learned everything other than the people we love is trivial and on September the twelfth, we promptly forgot. The flags were folded neatly and placed back in the closet for the next attack, the words to the Pledge and the National Anthem tucked way into the deep recesses of our minds. Perhaps it was so that you could cope, go on with your everyday life or perhaps it was because even before the bodies were cold from the destroyed towers we were being told we were acting too American and people in other countries didn’t like that. Or maybe just maybe it was pride, maybe you didn’t want little Johnny to see his daddy cry.

On September the eleventh you promised God you would be in church every single Sunday, now the spot where you sat sits empty and has for some time now. Being a Christian in today’s society is hard, people laugh at you, and they ridicule your faith, besides Sunday is the only day you can sleep in or go to the softball game, so much for the promises. You swore you would go more places and see more things and as of today the only place you see is home and work, once you realized the attacks were thousands of miles away from you, you no longer needed to keep all those promises and you went back to just being who you were. You have papers to fill out, big business deals to push through yeah you are a very important person, and the office would fall in on its walls if you took some time off to be with your family because you are so important.

If everyone had kept their promises on September the eleventh the country would be a totally different place today, the churches would be filled to capacity, the parks would be filled with parents and children, we would know who our neighbors are, a sunset would never go unnoticed and the terrorists would never consider hitting us again. We were at our strongest that day, each and every American ready to face the enemy in the street if need be, we would wave our flag in your face and make you like it and we were proud to be American. On the next day the chipping began, not at the rubble lying on the ground holding our dear precious people but at our need to be an American for everything it was worth good or bad all we wanted was to be American. Unseen forces began chipping away at that need, telling us that we were to loud, to proud, that we shouldn’t have flags everywhere and suddenly we grew quiet and the flags were slowly put away.

They told us that screaming USA was upsetting to people from the other countries and we stopped screaming that, they told us that if there was a God surely he would have stopped the attacks and he didn’t and we didn’t have an answer as to why so we stopped going to church. They told you, you could always take time off next year and take the family somewhere and that year never came so you just stopped asking. With each and every passing day that image of planes crashing into buildings is fading, it no longer wakes you up at night, planes flying overhead no longer give you pause for thought and tall buildings no longer give you a lump in your throat, you have come a long way, you have managed to forget.
