Dan Rather Expected to Report Boeing 787 Unsafe
Tuesday, September 18, 2007

NEW YORK — Boeing Co's (BA) new carbon-composite 787 Dreamliner plane may turn out to be unsafe and could lead to more deaths in crashes, according to a report by veteran journalist Dan Rather to be broadcast in the United States on Tuesday.

The new plane, which is mostly made from brittle carbon compounds rather than flexible aluminum, is more likely to shatter on impact and may emit poisonous chemicals when ignited, Rather will report based on interviews with a former Boeing engineer and various industry experts, according to a transcript of the show.

"The problem is all the unknowns that are being introduced and then explained away as if there is no problem," said Vince Weldon, a former Boeing engineer, in an interview to be broadcast as part of Rather's report.

Weldon compares a recent crash in a standard aluminum plane where the dented but intact fuselage kept fire at bay and allowed the passengers to leave the plane alive.

"With a composite airframe, the fuselage would not crumple, it would shatter ... that shattered hole would be there for the fire that's going into the airplane," Weldon says in the interview. "Instead of everyone getting out, it would be a far less positive result."

Weldon says he was fired by Boeing after a 46-year career because of his persistent complaints about the design of the 787. He claims he represents the view of others at Boeing who were afraid to speak out....http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,297248,00.html

They seem to be ignoring the fact that composite aircraft have been flying for years, and the problems they speak of simply have not occurred.

Years ago the anti-nukes opposed nuclear power using wild scenarios that not only did not but could not happen in the real world. Facts are impediments to activists.

It's all you need to know.

While I am no fan of Airbus, it has done quite a bit with composites.

This Air France A-340 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_France_Flight_358) crashed at Toronto Pearson airport:

1713

The composites were NOT the cause of the crash. All 309 people survived, and escaped the burning aircraft. As far as I know, "dangerous fumes" from composite construction did not cause any injuries.

The airplane did just fine.

Dan Rather is looking for a story to return him to prominence. The 12 viewers who see him on HDNet News (http://www.hd.net/danrather.html) aren't enough.

If you really, really want to see the program, you can download it HERE (http://www.hd.net/drr231.html) (Google video).

As one who has worked on aircraft for 20 years now, an aircraft made of composites is as every bit as safe as one that is made of traditional aluminum. And, many of those "aluminum" airplanes have alot of composite parts on them. (flight controls surfaces, floor panels, wing fillets and gear doors are but a few.) 90% of all airplane crashes are due to pilot error NOT technical problems.

And let us consider the source of this report, Dan Rather. This is the man who claimed George Bush lied about his military service even though the report was later found to be false. He is also the man who said of Bill Clinton that "a man can lie about a great many things and still be honest."

Dan Rather would lie about his ho mother and say she was a nun, if he thought it would get him on teevee again. Boy sick in the cocoanut.
