Okay, it's almost halloween. A horror writer never misses a chance to celebrate a day that supposed to spook people. That's why I plan to have several threads halloween related.

Okay here's my favorite horror movies in no order special.
Poltergeist
This one has its cheesy moments, but then it gets scary and made me truly frightened for this family that's in it. This has a very pro-family message. Don't see the sequels, the 2nd one is Anti-Christian, and the 3rd one is just plain stupid.

The Fog (1979)
The Fog has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. It's a very Lovecraftian type of film. Highly recommended. This has little blood in it. But, honestly, this would be 2 or 3 in this list if John Carpenter hadn't produced the remake, which sucked.

The Messengers (2007)
I love this one so much. It is a rare gem of the horror genre that has come out recently. It has sort of the same plot as Poltergeist but not at the same time. It had little blood, a great twist in the end, and guess what? It also had a pro-family message! Critics hated this movie for some reason. Mostly because they're liberal.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
What?? TR, the horror writer, likes a slasher film? Mark this day in your calender!
I love this film because of its incredible suspense and terror. I can stand gore, just as long as its not the entire film (like Cannibal Holocaust). I recommend this film for teenagers 14+.

Sphere Based Upon the novel by Michael Crichton
I consider this a horror film. Some people don't. It's all about what is in our mind coming out in to the real world. This is a horror movie set under the water that teaches that man can't play God.

The Exorcist
This movie is excellent! Still holds up after all these years! If I have to explain it to you, then you should get it for yourself.

Signs
This one is so good! I've never seen Mel Gibson like the way he is in this! This has a pro-family pro-God message in it. Highly recommended.

Alien
Another Lovecraftian film. Excellently made and written.

Aliens
Great Lovecraftian sequel. Better than original.

The Shining
Stephen King said this movie wasn't scary. Why am I not surprised? The films he wrote are some of the worst I've seen. This has to be one of the greatest horror movies ever.

The Last Broadcast
The Blair Witch Project stole the idea for this film. It didn't scare me that much, but it deserves attention because the filmakers some how pulled off making a great movie for $900.

I'll add more later.

What are your favorite horror movies? I swear to you right now, if you add Cannibal Holocaust as one of yours, I will hunt you down and stalk you like Freddy stalked Nancy. And I will do it without remorse.

All the Return of the Living Dead movies except for part 2, and the "re-make" of the first one. That makes what, two of those movies? Another good one was ZOMBIE, and DAWN OF THE DEAD, the first one.

Hitchcock's "Psycho"
Hitchcock's "The Birds"
M. Night Shyamalan's "The Sixth Sense"
M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs"
The Grudge I & 2
The First "Saw"
Jaws

And even though it's not scary in the least:
"Young Frankenstein"

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0013442/) (1922-silent) by far, the eeriest and most chilling vampire movie I have ever seen. There is nothing appealing or desirable about this vampire -- instead, an overwhelming corruption, rotting and an eternal curse far worse than the sleep of death.

1743 <object height="350" width="425"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MEOsb6CRvNU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"></object>

Death Takes A Holiday (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025037/) (1934) is not really a horror film, but a dark romance. It is definitely eerie enough for Halloween, though.
The Grim Reaper comes to earth in human form to learn why people hate and fear death, and what love means.

The Seventh Seal (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050976/) (1957) a weary crusader returns to his homeland, finding the black plague rampant. Death comes for him. The crusader challenges Death to a game of chess, for his life. A meditation on the meaning of life, death, and God.

1745

Carnival of Souls (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055830/) (1962). I still am not sure whether I liked this one, or not. Low budget story of a woman who doesn't know she is dead -- she has to slowly face the realization that she can't participate in the world around her any more -- and a hell, of sorts, awaits her. I caught it on TV late one night, and it was chilling enough that I have not wanted to see it again. This movie clearly inspired George Romero for his Night of the Living Dead, listed below.

1744

Night of the Living Dead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063350/) (1968) nonsense of course, but still scary as can be. Surprise ending.

1746

Alien (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/) (1979) wrenching, draining terror. "In space, no one can hear you scream."

Near Dark (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093605/) (1987) what does a young rancher do on a Friday night in the southwest? Get in your pickup truck, go into town for a night of fun, and maybe meet a girl.

What happens when the girl bites you on the neck, and by morning you have become violently ill and disoriented? Then you are kidnapped in broad daylight from your home, in front of your family, by a murderous gang of drifters -- and your own family pursues them in an effort to save you? As we are first repelled by, then attracted to the darkness, what moral choices do we have to make? Brutally bloody, with a great cast: Bill Paxton, Lance Henrickson, Adrian Pasdar give this film a brooding, realistic-enough to scare you feel.

1748 <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lO36we29syA&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lO36we29syA&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who also directed Strange Days and the excellent K-19: the Widowmaker (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0267626/).

Army of Darkness (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106308/) (1992) a silly horror-comedy. Ash, an arrogant, not-too-bright S-Mart store clerk, finds the "Necronomicon, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necronomicon)" a book of spells from the evil dead. The hand he picks the book up with "goes bad" (e.g., becomes an alien hand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_hand_syndrome)). Ash is forced to cut his own hand off to protect himself from it; and he (along with his 1974 Oldsmobile and a shotgun) are transported back to the 13th Century to fight an army of the dead.

The Sixth Sense (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167404/) (1999) a child is traumatized by terrifying apparitions. His mother worries that he is mentally ill. A psychologist tries to help. Riveting.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0404032/) (2005) loosely based on the real life case of Anneliese Michel (http://www.thenewstoday.info/20051205/the.75.steps.in.georgetown.and.then.the.coming.of. anneliese.michel.html), a German teenager who was allegedly possessed during the 1970's. A courtroom drama about whether the supernatural is real -- the fears of the night meet cold, hard facts in the courtroom: which is real?

Night of the Living Dead (1968) is one of my favorites. The ending pissed me off though. But otherwise it's an excellent movie.

I have seen many, but not all, of the Halloween and Friday the 13th movies. Many are quite good, especially the originals. Friday the 13th was filmed in the countryside of Warren and Sussex Counties here in New Jersey.

Does The Village (2004) count as a horror movie? That is one of my favorites.

The Last Broadcast (1998) is okay, but I was disappointed in the ending. I have it on this list because the story is set right here in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, although I don't think it was actually filmed around here.

And finally, The 13th Child: The Legend of the Jersey Devil (2002). The legend was changed, supposedly because the real legend is copyrighted. So the movie isn't nearly as good as it could have been. Some people say the acting was pretty cheesy too. But it was filmed in this area, within 6 or 8 miles of here. So I recommend it.

@ Barry
The Last Broadcast was a bit of a downer, but you have to consider the struggles they were in. And at least they didn't scew up the legend like 13th child did.
The Village is a horror flick. An extremely different one though. Lady in the Water is sort of a horror flick, but not entirely. It's more fantasy. The Village was what I like to call a "Chiller Thriller" where it's scary and thrilling at the same time.

@ Main Point:

Final Draft
This one is one my list because it's about a horror writer. Though, other than that it's a 7/10 at best.

Stephen King's 1408
This is one of the scariest flicks I've ever seen. When I saw it in the theater, I started screaming when the guy stepped outside of his hotel room, which is quite a way up, and started to make his way around the building. I was so engaged with that flick. I'm going to get it on DVD now.

Shaun of the Dead
You have to be a true horror geek to get this humor.

What Lies Beneath
This one has Harrison Ford in it. It truly shows that your sins will catch up to you.

I'm still forming my list, so don't think this is all.

I liked most of the ones others have already mentioned, especially the Nightmare on Elm Street series (all except #2).

I'd also add "The Hitcher (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091209/)" (the original from 1986 over the sequel, which wasn't bad either), "An American Werewolf in London (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082010/)", and "28 Days Later (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0289043/)".

For some reason the movie I am talking about is not listed. I find that so weird.
all the movies for the correct years (I was checking out 1925-1939) were silent or with different actors.

I know it is the right title. I'll have to dig into my Mom's old movie collection to find it.

Do you remember any of the specific actors?

Also Prez, if I were you, I would see the B&W version of The Haunting. It's a classic B&W horror flick that makes you lie awake at night. It has no gore in it. Pure terror.

Hitchcock's "Psycho"

M. Night Shyamalan's "The Sixth Sense"
M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs"
The Grudge I & 2
The First "Saw"
Jaws

"Young Frankenstein"

I haven't seen Saw I, is it any good?

I liked Child's Play, but that's about it for me.

It's the movie, "The Legend of Hell House" starring Roddy McDowell.

That's based off of the same Shirley Jackson novel that The Haunting is based off of. If you liked that, see the Black and White version of it. Don't see the 1990's version though, it sucked really bad. Here's a hint: It's a horror movie with Owen Wilson in it.

I have decided to prove that I'm a true horror geek:

When Ed says to Shaun in Shaun of the Dead, "Who died and made you beeping king of the zombies?" That's an actual movie. "King of the Zombies" is an old zombie flick.

The Wolf Man is missing something that the rest of the werewolf movies always have. Can anyone guess what it is?

The League of Extraoridnary Gentlemen, even though it's excellent, in my opinion, totally screwed up the vampire mythology. The vampire chick is up during the day, but vampires are only suppose to be up at night.

Stephen King's Storm of the Century was ripped off of Dean Koontz's novel Darkfall. Stephen King wrote the script himself.

In the 1970's version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the man running and hitting Donald Sutherland's car screaming "They're coming!" Is the same actor that played the main character in the first Body Snatchers that ran and yelled "They're coming!" in the end. So, does that mean he's been running for 20+ years?

I seriously need to get a life...

Did you see any of the sequels? I don't recommend ANY of those, but the first one was good. There's a twist, and if you've watched any of the sequels prior to the original, you will have ruined it. I am only recommending the first one. It would be like watching sequels of The Sixth Sense without watching the original...you ruin the suspense and surprise of the first one.

I liked Child's Play, but that's about it for me.

Agreed. Same with The House of Wax -- the original was da bomb, the remake was A bomb.

I disagree. Vamps can move about during the day, as long as they don't find themselves in direct sunlight. TLoEG is one of my favorite movies -- we even bought it! Would LOVE to see a sequel to it ... wonder what "new" book characters they would/could add?!!

Well, TLoEG is a good movie, but in Bram Stoker's Dracula, the vampire only came out at night. And in the movie, the vampire was in direct sunlight when she was standing over Quatermain's grave. No, I did not spoil anything. That's not the spoiler. :smirky:
As for the new book characters, I personally would like to see Lovecraft's Herbert West in there. That would be so cool. Maybe even Sherlock Holmes would be cool.

I haven't seen any of the Saw's, they all looked like torture horror films. I don't really like those much. But since your opinion was correct about Koontz, I shall see Saw. (Heh, heh, see saw, brilliant!)

I think Watchers would've been a sweet horror flick. (I finally read the novel, excellent!) I got really pissed when I watched Watchers again and saw that Travis is a boy. A boy, for Pete's sake! In the novel, he was a marine! Shame! Shame!!! SHAME!!!!!!!
Oh, Homes, did you hear they're making The Husband in to a movie? Haven't read it yet, I'm still reading The Door to December.

Child's Play sort of was entertaining. If you were seven, you would love it. I just like it. Here's my rating system of movies:

Loved=Excellent
Good=Good (duh)
Like=Okay
Hate=Terrible
Loathed=Garbage to be avoided

Teenager hack and slash, screaming cat, etc., movies bore me.

Movies made to gross out the audience with hideous new methods of killing people never seen before on TV aren't scary, IMO.

There are some Slashers that had hack and slash and were excellent. A Nightmare on Elm Street, was one. You could cut the suspense in that with a knife. Jaws was gory, heck, even Alien had a gross scene, but it doesn't stop them from being good.

I agree that hack and slash movies can be boring, but, they can also be excellent.

Love to see Sherlock Holmes in there! I'm not familiar with Herbert West -- of course, the gunslinger from Stephen King might be cool. Have to give it more thought. Perhaps you could write up a draft and think of some others!

Love the pun! :thumb:

I thought Saw was, although VERY graphic, a very suspenseful thriller. I'm VERY rarely surprised at movie plots anymore, and I was pleasantly (albeit grossed out as well, LOL) surprised. It's worth watching the first one, but the others are pure trash.

Made me mad too! http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/images/icons/icon8.gif The book was so totally awesome and the movies so HORRIBLY awful, it was like night and day! With CGI being what it is today, somebody could have really racked in the bucks if they had made the movie true to the book.

Herbert West was a scientist that created zombies. Read the story here:
http://www.horrormasters.com/Themes/horror_classics.htm
The Story's called Herbert West: Re-Animator by H.P. Lovecraft
I'm thinking about being published on HorrorMasters, but my fellow writers on the Writer's Digest Forums say that I should do print magazines. I've done the math, I could make a lot more there than in a magazine.

I've done some thinking, if I could make a league it would have these people:
Herbert West
Maltilda Dixon's Ghost (See the movie Darkness Falls, or Google Maltilda Dixon)
Van Helsing
Sherlock Holmes

That's all I can think of right now. Yes, that would be an awesome league to see.

Okay, I have two more to add on my list.

The Forgotten
This is about a woman who has her son die a couple months before and she grieves him a lot. The next day, people say that her son was imaginary and that the son never was born. This leads to a shocking thrill ride. This is like a two hour long X-Files episode.

Misery
This is about a author who gets held captive by a crazy old lady after she rescues him from a car crash. It's better than you think it will be. It's one of the few good Stephen King novels, btw.

Prez, that's nothing. My dad for years believed there was B&W film called Haunting of Hell House, when there wasn't. It was called "The Haunting of Hill House" (aka The Haunting). I think they're all good, but maybe the list could include some recent releases? I heard that the "SAW" movies are very scary. I don't know. Just what I heard.

The first "Hellraiser" movie scared the crap out of me. LOL

Okay, Jaws is now on my list.

Jaws
A great, what I like to call, Chiller Thriller, is about a killer shark.

Alright, now that that is over with.

I wouldn't put Jaws as #1, that was just the tip of the iceberg horror for me. I would put it as #10. I don't know what #1 would be, nor would I care to find out. I don't think horror films shouldn't be classified as a number on a list, because each are different and scary in their own ways.

The first "Saw" movie was brilliantly conceived and executed. I don't care for the gore ... they could have used less, because the drama and suspense of the movie not only works but is completely unexpected. It deserves to be on the list. As for the sequels, they should have gone straight to DVD and avoided the box office. They're just not worth it. No, of course I haven't seen the new one, Saw IV (has it been released yet?), and I have no intention of seeing it. Somethings just can't be improved upon -- Saw is one of them.

Eww, "The Last House on the Left" should not be on the list, let alone that high on it. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" sucks as well.

Maybe not one of the scariest, but probably one of the creepiest:

Willard (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310357/), with Crispin Glover.

Even the music video from the movie is creepy.

Last House on the Left was awful so was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I'm glad the original and new version of The Hills Have Eyes didn't make it on there.
But do you know the worst horror flick I've seen recently? New version of Halloween. The script seemed to feel like Rob Zombie rolled it up and smoked weed out of it and then started to type the remake. It was that bad. So was I Know Who Killed Me. Ghost Ship has to top them all off on the worst horror movie list.

The show that came on after that one added more scary movies:

30 The Grudge
29 Cape Fear
28 Cabin Fever
27 Slither
26 Play Misty For Me
25 Red Eye
24 The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
23 Manhunter
22 American Psycho
21 Dead Alive (Peter Jackson, of LotR fame directed this!)
20 2001: A Space Odyssey
19 Fear
18 Army of Darkness
17 Christine
16 Saw II (I TOTALLY disagree with this)
15 The Exorcism of Emily Rose
14 Scanners
13 Dawn of the Dead (Remake)
12 Wolf Creek
11 The Stepford Wives (original)
10 Children of the Corn (scared me BAD)
9 Open Water (a bore)
8 Land of the Dead
7 The Devil's Rejects
6 Vertigo
5 Oldboy
4 Video Drum (?)
3 Saw (should be #1)
2 A Clockwork Orange
1 Hostel (no way)

I just bought 1408 and saw it for the 2nd time. It was better than the 1st time. So, I decided to post it and what it's about. I think it's one of the best horror films to come out in at least two years.
1408 (2007)
http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/coverv/60/1325560.jpg (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1408/gallery.php)

Plot: A published writer goes to a hotel room that's haunted to finish writing a chapter in his book about haunted hotels. Based off the Stephen King story with the same name.

Why I like this film: This movie hit me hard. This character struck me as someone I might've been if I had never been saved. This is a heart-pounding movie with an unexpected spiritual message about God.

We part ways on that one, TR, I thought it stunk. I was sorely disappointed in 1408. It wasn't scary at all to me, and the ending was a sorry one, imho. I was so looking forward to watching it too. Just really disappointed.

Is that based off of a Stephen King story? I swear, I think I've seen a title like that by him.

The alternate ending was crap. I'm glad they left it out of the movie. I'm sticking with the original. It kind of struck me as Misery meets The Shining.

Wow, and I thought this thread was dead...

Anyway, I have more excellent movies for my list:

In the Mouth of Madness
This is about a horror writer that has the power to control reality. I think it's kind of weird that he has the same hair style that I have...except it's white. This is directed by John Carpenter (Halloween, 1980's The Thing, The Fog) and inspired by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft.

The Invisible
A dark drama that is about a second chance at life.

Black Sheep
A horror comedy with gore. The monsters are of course sheep.

The Wolf Man
The Wolf Man is my favorite monster from the Universal Horror Monsters. There are several ways you can look at this. You can look at it as a monster movie or you can look deeper (as you should) and find your own meaning of the Wolf Man. I hope they don't screw up the remake...

I said this already, but The Car (1977) is one of my favorite movies of all time. But I have many favorites.
Here are a couple more horror movies:
Nightmare on the 13th Floor (1990) This one is a TV movie. I found it on DVD last year, or the year before. Otherwise, I saw it on TV when it came out, I think.
Then there's Fallen (1998), which is less horror movie and more supernatural suspense police drama. I really liked it. And the scenes at the cabin in the woods were filmed about 7 or 8 miles from here.
Sleepy Hollow (1999) is not really horror either, but I liked it a lot. It's kind of creepy.
The Hearse (1980) is another creepy suspense movie, and not really horror, but I liked it a lot.

I saw the movie in the theater.

There are only a few "scary" moments. It is mostly a courtroom story, leaving the question whether demons and exorcism are real, or only overheated imagination.

Very well done...

Go to YouTube for trailers and movie clips.

You can also find information about the real "Emily Rose," a young German girl named Anneliese Michel, both on Google and on YouTube.

Does Pee Wee's Big Adventure qualify as a horror movie? Because it's certainly scary to see a grown man act like that...

I don't really know.

My mom thinks Sybil will scare me, we got it from Netflix. It will arrive after I get Dead Silence (which I want to watch).

The real Emily Rose was a young Catholic girl from Germany named Anneliese Michel.

What in God's name? Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/02/AR2005090200559.html)

The first person to recognize that Anneliese Michel was possessed by demons was an older woman accompanying the girl on a pilgrimage. She noticed that Anneliese would not walk past a certain image of Jesus, refused to drink water from a holy spring and smelled bad -- hellishly bad. An exorcist in a nearby town examined Michel and returned a diagnosis of demonic possession.

...

Under the influence of her demons, Michel ripped the clothes off her body, compulsively performed up to 400 squats a day, crawled under a table and barked like a dog for two days, ate spiders and coal, bit the head off a dead bird and licked her own urine from the floor.

...

Michel's recorded voice can still send shivers up your spine. It is the voice of a demon, growling, barking, inhuman...Sometimes the demons...even answered the exorcists' questions, explaining what was wrong with the church or why they were in Hell..."People are stupid as pigs...[t]hey think it's all over after death. It goes on."

...

[T]he Anneliese Michel trial also set reason against faith.

...

The trial went to the heart of faith: If the Bible is true, then the miracles must have really happened, and Satan must be real.

If you have the stomach for it, HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4n9vK0_mdk) are some still photos of Anneliese Michel with audio from one of her exorcisms.

Thanks Thomas.

Alright, I just got done watching John Carpenter's Village of the Damned. It was very entertaining, even though it has its flaws. The ending, knowing John, was very unexpected on my part. Worth a watch.

for me, it's Halloween (1978),The Evil Dead (1982), Army of Darkness (1993), Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993), Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers (1988), and The Blob (1988)

Prince of Darkness gave me the willies for weeks after I saw it. Same with the original Halloween. But I have to say the scariest movie I've even seen was The Exorcist, at a midnight movie showing. I had two guy friends take me to see it, and they had to literally hold me in my seat, one on each side, about 40 minutes in. I was ready to get up & walk out...

I thought The Exorcist book was scarier than the movie.

Is it just me or do the black people in horror movies keep dying? So much for PC that some members complain about...
