ESPN TV reported one hour ago that Torre was in, but that isn't true. Turns down 1 year deal worth $5 million.

They wanted him to take a paycut of 1/3 this year's salary - from 7.5 mil to 5 mil (with bonuses).

Torre made $7.5 million this year, the final season of a $19.2 million, three-year contract. His new deal would have included substantial bonuses for each round of the playoffs the team reached.

Torre doesn't need the B.S. (Steinbrenner) at his age. I hope Torre gets a job with the Red Sox. LOL

Teevee said even with the pay cut, Torre was the highest-paid manager in baseball.

I'm with Best. In Torre's shoes I'd happily just fade away and spend my time and riches on my grandkids.

I would care, but this still wont get the Texas Rangers into the World Series

Well, that sucks for Torre, but if I were in his shoes I'd probably reject the deal too. Anyways, I hope he finds a place he likes...

Torre: Yanks' Offer Was an Insult

Joe Torre had a hunch it would come to this.

And when the New York Yankees offered him a one-year contract with a hefty paycut, performance-based bonuses—and no room to negotiate—he was insulted and figured he had no choice but to walk away.

"The fact that somebody is reducing your salary is just telling me they're not satisfied with what you're doing," Torre said Friday at a news conference. "There really was no negotiation involved. I was hoping there would be, but there wasn't...

A $5m insult. Must be nice to be that rich.

From a Sox fan, I don't blame Torre for leaving. Personally, the contract offer to me seems like Steinbrenner didn't have the balls to fire him outright and knew that he would force him out by a contract rejection.

I'm guessing that Yankee fans are in for a rough stretch as Rivera and Posada have pretty much indicated that if Joe goes, so will they and I don't foresee the Yanks re-signing A-Rod, especially since Scott "The Baseball Team Fleecer" Boros is his agent.

Good luck, Joe. You deserve better than Steinbrenner who is the Al Davis of baseball.
