Quin Hillyer: The case against Huckabee

This piece (http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=12205) made a little stir in headlines so I’m bringing it down to Times Square. On a day when we’re staring down the barrel of the DREAM Act, it seems only appropriate to give an open-borders advocate a little unwanted attention. John Hawkins (http://www.rightwingnews.com/mt331/2007/10/the_conservative_case_for_and.php) has his own case against (and for) Huck out this morning amounting to “he’s George Bush with better oratory,” but Quin Hillyer gets a bit more specific.

< snip , snip >

Ask lots of folks in Arkansas, including Republicans, and a fair number will probably tell you that Huck is for Huck is for Huck. National media folks like David Brooks, dealing in surface appearances only, rave about what a nice guy Huckabee is, and a moral exemplar to boot. If they only did a little homework, they would discover a guy with a thin skin, a nasty vindictive streak, and a long history of imbroglios about questionable ethics…

Isn't Huckleberry simply Bill Clinton with an R after his name?

Welp, another imperfect candidate tossed into the dust bin; on to the next one that we can find dirt on to talk trash about and call nasty little names while keeping one eye on the horizon in hopes of the return of Saint Ronald. [sarcasm/off]

Nice hit piece. It's wack-a-mole, Republican presidential candidate version.

Yep, 'pubs are playing right into 'rat hands by rejoicing every time the 'rats and their handmaidens in the DBM do a hit piece on one of our candidates that happens to be one that rejoicer doesn't like. By all means, let's do all we can to get Hitliary elected and into the oval office as soon as possible.

Did you guys know that one of Sen Thompson kids threw a fit out in public once?

There is evidence that Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo ate at a restaurant owned by illegal Mexicans.

Salsa stained shirts prove it.

I almost hate to bring this up because I don't want to put the final nail in the coffin, but did you know that Jeri Thompson farted once...? In PUBLIC!! I was so taken back by this new revelation that I changed my voter registration.

Playing into the rats hands ? Thats a stretch.
Nothing wrong with trying to weed out the inconsistant candidates.

That nonsense has nothing to do with the topic whatsoever.

Given the choice between Huck, Giulianni and Romney...

Huckabee wins hands down. Dunno whether I'd pick him over Thompson or not. Fred's been kind of coy on some subjects that are dear to me.

I would prefer Huck out of them also.
I like how Huck is somewhat conservative and has charisma.
Hey he's got support from Chuck Norris ! :thumb:

Well, I don't find joy in a candidate's bad press. I do think we should be free to post articles, as we find them, that tell things about the candidates. I didn't know we were just supposed to blindly follow the GOP ship where ever she may roam.

And for the record, I am on the record here in posts saying I like(d) Mike Huckabee and have been most impressed with his speeches, even over Fred's.

So, to me information like this, ...

http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=596842
Fourteen times, the ethics commission -- a respected body, not a partisan witch-hunt group -- investigated claims against Huckabee. Five of those times, it officially reprimanded him. And, as only MSNBC among the big national media has reported at any real length, there were lots of other mini-scandals and embarrassments along the way.

He used public money for family restaurant meals, boat expenses, and other personal uses. He tried to claim as his own some $70,000 of furniture donated to the governor's mansion. He repeatedly, and obstinately, against the pleadings even from conservative columnists and editorials, refused to divulge the names of donors to a "charitable" organization he set up while lieutenant governor -- an outfit whose main charitable purpose seemed to be to pay Huckabee to make speeches. Then, as a kicker, he misreported the income itself from the suspicious "charity."

Huckabee has been criticized, reasonably so, for misusing the state airplane for personal reasons. And he and his wife, Janet, actually set up a "wedding gift registry" (they had already been married for years) to which people could donate as the Huckabees left the governorship, in order to furnish their new $525,000 home.

... I find, if nothing else, helpful in finding out information about the candidate(s). Doesn't mean I take things as gospel, we shouldn't, it behooves each of us to do our own digging to get to the bottom of the truth and make educated choices.

I can't speak for everyone on the board, at least I won't in this case :smirky: However, I was just trying to make light of the fact we are more willing to post negative stuff about the candidates that we don't want verses the candidates that we do want. At this point in the election process for 08 that started back in 04  we all would be wise to have a sense of humor about the process or we will snap. I know I have caught myself getting too wrapped up in this process and thank goodness a good friend on this board has brought it back into focus

I heard that she peed in a pool when she was 12 - a public pool shared with black children!

BTW, Republican Legion, I have forgotten more scandals and evidence of wrong doing by Hillary than every Pub-basher can dig up on the entire slate of Pub candidates. So, in this perspective, translated also as "BFD!", my "nonsensical comment" comment makes perfect sense, IMO.

Since watching the last debate, my opinion of all the Pub candidates has risen. Yes, that means McCain and Guliani, also. I'm not about to let some little nobody political gadfly start wearing down my support for any of them.

His father was a hampster and his mother smelt of elderberries. Tell him to go away or else I shall fart in his general direction.

Awwww, Elucidator.....you're very welcome. I consider you a good friend as well. :P

I'm not anti-Huckabee, at least not yet. These relevations are new to me so I'll wait before making up my mind about them. I will say one thing: the thought of him as the Republican nominee scares the bejeesus out of the people at Daily Kos. Not necessarily his policies so much as they think he'll wipe the floor with the Dem nominee.
