Teacher wins early bid to carry loaded gun to class

October 13, 2007 07:00am

HIGH school English teacher Shirley Katz went to court in Oregon yesterday to fight for the right to carry a loaded gun to class.

As America reeled from a series of shootings and school massacre plots, Ms Katz won the first round of her legal bout for the right to carry her 9mm Glock pistol on to school grounds.

After a day-long hearing, a judge said he would not dismiss her lawsuit against the school district.

Jackson County Circuit Judge G. Philip Arnold said he would issue a written opinion on Ms Katz's claim that Medford School District policy prohibiting teachers from carrying weapons on school grounds violated state law. ...From the first link.

Ore. Teacher Wants to Take Gun to School
By JEFF BARNARD – Oct 8, 2007

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — High school English teacher Shirley Katz insists she needs to take her pistol with her to work because she fears her ex-husband could show up and try to harm her. She's also worried about a Columbine-style attack.

But Katz's district has barred teachers from bringing guns to school, so she is challenging the ban as unlawful, since Oregon is among states that allow people with a permit to carry concealed weapons into public buildings.

"This is primarily about my Second Amendment right and Oregon law and the simple fact that I know it is my right to carry that gun," said Katz, 44, sitting at the kitchen table of her home outside this city of 74,000.

"I have that (concealed weapons) permit. I refuse to let my ex-husband bully me. And I am not going to let the school board bully me, either."...http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jGLqbyW_oXVAOOZmJx8D6rKQ8n4AD8S59HRO0

Good for her.

From personal experience, she's not the only one, just the only one who's gone public with her carrying a weapon. I know of at least two teachers in my neck of the woods who have CC permits and carry at school.

This reminds me of a time when I had to courier classified material from Key West to Omaha. I approached the security desk where everyone was in line for screening, with my documentation that exempted my briefcase from search. One agent there was training a new agent, and when she saw me approaching with the letter, she turned to the trainee and said, "This man is probably carrying weapons." You should have seen the looks on the other passengers' faces.

I wouldn't want to carry a weapon to school. I'd probably use it before lunchtime.

Good! Maybe we'll finally see someone be able to stop these school shootings. If this truly was a free country, Dylan Klebold would have barely made it to the front door at Columbine before a gun carrying teacher did him in.

The Medford teacher who sparked a showdown over the prickly issue of guns in schools lost her court challenge Friday, setting up a statewide case on whether school employees can pack concealed handguns to class.

A Jackson County Circuit judge ruled Friday that the Medford School District can forbid a teacher from carrying a concealed handgun on school grounds.

I pray with all my heart that she appeals this. I hope some of the pro-gun organizations get behind her financially so that she can mount an appeal based on the 2A.
