Fred has more state legislative support than anyone!
In case you missed it, earlier this month Republican state legislators turned out in force to announce their support for Fred Thompson for President. Led by Senate Minority Leader Don Caruth and House Minority Leader Tim Armstead, Fred has more support from our lawmakers than any other candidate. Look for more exciting endorsement news to follow soon!
Fred sets the tone at latest GOP debate
Pundits agree that Fred set the tone at the latest Republican debate on Sunday from Orlando. As campaign manager Bill Lacy said, "Fred Thompson set the agenda for tonight's debate which largely focused on the question of who is the authentic conservative in the race. Fred delivered a strong and Presidential performance. He started fast and never slowed down. Fred made a very strong case that he is the authentic conservative in this race, establishing that his credentials go all the way back to his reading of Barry Goldwater's The Conscience of a Conservative. He also pointed out on a number of occasions where his opponents records fall short." Read all the reviews at http://fredfile.fred08.com/
Fred announces plan to secure border, enforce immigration laws
Senator Fred Thompson on Oct. 23rd unveiled a comprehensive border security and immigration enforcement proposal that would make America safer by increasing security at our nation's borders, enforcing our country's existing laws to reduce the incentive for illegal immigration and streamlining the legal immigration process.
"A country that cannot secure its borders will not remain a sovereign nation and you cannot have national security without border security," said Thompson. "It's not only necessary for any meaningful immigration reform, but border security plays a key role in both the interdiction of illegal drugs and in defending America against terrorist threats. Weak borders allow terrorists and smugglers, as well as millions of illegal aliens, easy entrance to the United States."
Thompson's two-pronged plan, which can be found in its entirety at www.fred08.com (http://www.fred08.com/), is based on two principles: Securing the Border and Enforcing the Law, and Improving the Legal Immigration Process.
Highlights of the proposal include:

No Amnesty: Amnesty undermines U.S. law and policy, rewards bad behavior, and is unfair to the millions of immigrants who follow the law and are awaiting legal entry into the United States.
Enforce Existing Federal Laws: Enforce the laws Congress has already enacted to prevent illegal aliens from unlawfully benefiting from their presence in the country including:
End Sanctuary Cities by cutting off discretionary federal grant funds as appropriate to any community that, by law, ordinance, executive order, or other formal policy directs its public officials not to comply with the provisions of 8 USC 1373 and 8 USC 1644, which prohibit any state or local government from restricting in any way communications with the Department of Homeland Security "regarding the immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of an alien in the United States."
Deny discretionary Federal education grants as appropriate to public universities that violate federal law by offering in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens without also offering identical benefits to United States citizens, regardless of whether or not they live in the state, as required by 8 USC 1623.
Deny discretionary Federal grants as appropriate to states and local governments that violate federal law by offering public benefits to illegal aliens, as prohibited by 8 USC 1621(a).
Increased Border Security: Doubling Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents handling interior enforcement, increasing the Border Patrol to at least 25,000 agents, and increasing detention space to incarcerate illegal aliens we arrest rather than letting them go with a promise to show up later for legal proceedings against them.
Attrition through Enforcement: Reduce the number of illegal aliens through increased enforcement against unauthorized alien workers and their employers. Without illegal employment opportunities available, fewer illegal aliens will attempt to enter the country, and many of those illegally in the country now likely will return home. This course of action offers a reasonable alternative to the false choices currently proposed to deal with the 12 million or more aliens already in the U.S. illegally: either arrest and deport them all, or give them all amnesty.
Maximize Legal Immigration Program Efficiency: Reduce the backlogs and streamline the process for immigrants and employers who seek to follow the law. Also, simplify and expedite the application processes for temporary visas. Caps for any category of temporary work visa would be increased as appropriate, if it could be demonstrated that there are no Americans capable and willing to do the jobs.
Modernize Immigration Law/Policy: Change the nature of our legal immigration system to welcome immigrants who can be economic contributors to our country and are willing to learn the English language and reduce the scope of chain migration by giving family preference in the allocation of lawful permanent resident status only to spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens, and no one else (no siblings, no parents, no adult children, etc.).
English as Official Language: Make English the official language of the U.S. to promote assimilation and legal immigrants' success, and require English proficiency in order for any foreign person to be granted lawful permanent resident status.
Preference for American Military Service: Place those foreign persons who are lawfully present in the country and who serve honorably in the Armed Forces of the United States on a faster, surer track to U.S. citizenship.

How is he polling there?

Not good. But if you look at that Red Blue map floating around here there is only one red dot in WV. And most of the reds lean left, so McCain is the choice here. But this poll is rather old.

IMO, the single issue that is going to cost Fred this nomination is his inability to get his message out to the public... And in that, the Leftist media is running a successful campaign to neutralize him...

If these prominent Republicans in WV are so hot for Fred, why isn't that translating into more Fred support among the voters... Something in this doesn't add up...

The media here plays up the Dems. That's how Byrd stays in. Our local Newspapers and TV barely mention this. The media here has Robert Byrd walking on water. And many people don't really follow politics unless they are in it here. They just know "my daddy was a democrat, his daddy was a democrat ... so I am a democrat too."

You're lucky your state is landlocked.

BTW, has anybody read or heard anything from Thompson on why he voted for McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform? I know he now says it was the wrong way to vote, but has he ever explained what his reasoning was that supported his judgment to vote "yes" at the time?

It was discussed here before, but that was some time ago.

Thanks, Rhino. I didn't read all the posts in all the threads, but I read quite a bit. I still didn't see any actual reason he has given for voting for McCain-Feingold other than saying if he'd known then what he knows now, he wouldn't have. That makes me wonder why he didn't know more about it when he should have. I think he voted for it because he and McCain are friends. He was, after all, McCain's co-chairman in his 2000 prez campaign. I wonder if he would have done the same thing on McCain's immigration bill were he still in the senate when it came up.

In one of the threads linked to above, you said, "I don't think we're gonna be offered one of those this time around. I personally think this was just early in Fred's political career and he simply fell victim to the hype because he was naive. Another thing I like about his willingness to admit the mistake is the likeliehood that he will be far less likely to repeat it. Those who deny ever making mistakes are the ones who never learn from them."

Thompson had been in politics in some form for thirty years when he voted for McCain-Feingold, and in the senate for eight years at that time. He wasn't wet behind the ears and it wasn't his first rodeo. He voted against tort reform which is desperately needed in this country, as well as the marriage amendment, one of two charges in the Clinton impeachment matter, and voted for McCain-Feingold. I'm still for the guy, but I wish he'd explain himself more thoroughly on these issues.
