Giuliani: Illegals are a federal problem
<!-- END HEADLINE --> <!-- BEGIN STORY BODY --> By LIBBY QUAID, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 25 minutes ago
Responsibility for stopping illegal immigration belongs to the federal government and not to cities, states or businesses, Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani said Tuesday.
Giuliani told small-business owners he would not punish them for unwittingly hiring illegal immigrants.
Federal officials are "trying to put the responsibility for this on employers, on city government, on state government," the former New York mayor said during a conference call arranged by the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

He is right in that the federal government is responsible but since they don't do much at all, then why not have states and cities pass their own laws to fight illegal immigration? Notice when they do try a liberal judge knocks the laws down.

Your not going to stop it unless business has strong incentives not to. Unless the fines are brutal. It looks like Rudy is going after the vote that wants to leave it the way it is. Risky. There are so many who think we cannot stay competitive, without the illegals. They fear real high costs and American citizens refusing to do the hard work.

Technically, from a a purely legal standpoint, Rudy is right, but I think his political approach is a big mistake.

Did you miss this? "Giuliani says he would build a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border that includes high-tech monitoring to detect those trying to enter the U.S. illegally. He also calls for hiring more border patrol agents. Legal immigrants should be issued a tamper-proof, federal identification card, he said, "and if something is wrong with that card, it's the federal government's responsibility, not yours."
Republican candidates have been sparring over illegal immigration, an issue that angers conservatives who hold sway in party primaries and who argue that the problem is straining schools and hospitals and taking jobs away from U.S. citizens."
I agree with your conclusion as to that part of what he said that you quoted and I disagree with him, but he said more than that and was specific about how he would address the problem of illegals.

I'm just going to have to start doing the research that you do. I tend to take what the members here say as truth. If Rudy has some kind of plan that makes sense good. It is a complicated problem. For sure this would have been much better had we started enforcing the law 40 years ago and kept doing it. Now it is one huge mess.

I don't think it is really all that complicated! Along with building a fence you give business a choice; you use illegals and we will shut you down or you can use prison labor to pick your produce or build your house. You appoint Sheriff Joe Arpaio as head of a newly developed Dept of Prison Labor Force and you utilize prison labor to fill those menial labor jobs that Americans mythically won't do. Not rocket science and a hell of a lot cheaper and teach these bastards a trade! You require everyone to "re-register" for all gubmint benefits during their birth month and you had better be able to show up with a birth certificate, SS card, 1 form of picture ID and a utility bill from your residence. You don't show up your benefits expire starting on the 1st of the following month!
There you have it! Unfortunately none of the POTUS candidates can afford my advisor fee...

Without doing what you advise, the problem will keep growing. Business, those conservatives who contribute don't want to lose the labor. They need people who will do the work. We are going to have to allow some kind of exception to all the labor rules and benefits packages so business can get the work done at a competitive cost.
