I believe that back in the day, it was very uncommon to hear about male nurses, or males majoring in nurses. Even today, males make up about 8% of the total nurse workforce.
But I have not once heard anyone comment negatively on my desire to become a nurse. I believe it was my calling, and not one person has given me a weird look or said that is a female job. Quite the opposite to be honest.
I think helping people, and having a job that I could respect when I retire is what I looked at when starting college.
Now two years into the program, I don't regret it one bit. I love the classes I take, and the 'on the job' clinicals I go to. But I still have not seen anyone comment on me wanting to be a male nurse. I was just wondering what you guys think of the whole concept of a male nurse.

The doors in nursing are very wide open right now, with millions of jobs available. The pay is now competitive, making it one of the best professions in the country in terms of starting wage and salary increases. I don't consider 60k a year to be 'rich', but that is a lot of money. And with further education you can be making upwards to 90k a year.
But that is not the reason for picking this career. Many careers have good starting salaries and high wages. I think I have always loved hospitals, and the whole medical and science fields in general. Plus the general idea of being an asset to people's lives, if that makes sense.
I just don't think it is a female job, though. It is dominated by females, but overall I think males can bring a lot to the healthcare profession.

I have an immense amount of respect for any man who chooses the honorable profession of nursing. The son of a good friend of mine recently graduated from nursing school and landed a fabulous job at a local hospital in the ER, and he LOVES it. I know this young man personally, and he is a skilled, compassionate, and proficient practitioner, and I am so proud of him. It takes a great amount of patience, heart, and a deep desire to help to make it as a nurse, and to be a male nurse requires the fortitude to put up with idiots who think the profession is "for girls."
Good on you, Aaron :thumb: . Stick with it and hold fast to your convictions. May the Lord richly bless you in all your endeavors and keep your path true.

What do you think of male nurses?I think the pay is good and the hours suck. What else would I think about them?
Oh yeah, and the female nurse like them because they can lift and move the heavier stuff.

I concur. I have respect for the profession, although to be honest, if I was sick, I would prefer to have a pretty female nurse taking care of me... :D

If you haven't heard anyone comment negatively, then wouldn't you assume that everyone is positive about your endeavor? Sounds like you're fishing for a negative comment from us so you can get on a rant or something.

So there's a problem with this? You are dissatisfied that no one has given you grief? I don't really get where you're coming from with this. Maybe no one really cares what you do for a living.....it's your choice and we here at FC tend to live and let live....if that's what you want to do .....DO IT! Nobody here is going to slight you for your choice!

Apparrently YOU seem to have some misgivings or sense of "shame" in your choice.....we don't .........hell, be proud....YOU said it's something YOU love, it's a job YOU respect....what difference would it make what WE think?:noggin:

Buckeye, I was asking because even though I have not encountered it, I have seen it before. Kind of the thing with the male teachers, everyone thinks it is a females job. I don't think that is right in my opinion, so I was hoping to get an opinion from someone who does.

When people say male nurse, I think of Gaylord Focker from Meet the Parents/Fockers. I have no problem with them.

I had open heart surgery and all of the nurses male or female were professional and compassionate. It was the doctors who treated me like a piece of meat. Just one more contribution to their country club dues. Most doctors treat nurses like servants.

Like Oldeshooter says, I have the utmost respect for nurses of either gender. My wife and I have spent a lot of time in the hospitals recently, and the REAL problems have started with the Dr's in the ER.
Follow your dream. The nurses are lifesavers.

It is true. They don't give nurses their due, which is unfortunate. They do a majority of the work. Tis the nature of getting a higher education, though, which I respect.

My wife is a nurse manager, and she'd much rather have male nurses working for her than female. Easier to get along with, no bitching and whining - and those are my wife's descriptions.
