The state of Texas has dropped a math curriculum that is mandated for use in New York City schools, saying it was leaving public school graduates unprepared for college.

The curriculum, called Everyday Mathematics, became the standard for elementary students in New York City when Mayor Bloomberg took control of the public schools in 2003.

About three million students across the country now use the program, including students in 28 Texas school districts, and industry estimates show it holds the greatest market share of any lower-grade math textbook, nearly 20%. But Texas officials said districts from Dallas to El Paso will likely be forced to drop it altogether after the Lone Star State's Board of Education voted to stop financing the third-grade textbook, which failed to teach students even basic multiplication tables, a majority of members charged.

One board member, Terri Leo, who is also a Texas public school teacher, called the textbook "the very worst book that we had submitted."

Too bad Bloomberg couldn't make it in national politics. He'd have had to answer for that phony program, and its exposure coulda helped millions more kids learn basic math by trashing the trash and getting something that actually worked.

They dropped that curriculum in a local school in Ohio too, or at least one that was very similar to it. I thought it was a great curriculum, as long as it was used as a supplement to other math curriculums rather than a replacement. But it wasn't.

It is difficult to learn mathematics without a good knowledge of the tables. The "progressives" are intent on trying to teach students that the number 6, or whatever number, is not a number, but...a...symmmm-bol representing the quantity of the amount in two sets of similar or different things BLAHBLAHBLAHYACKYACKYACKFARTGRUNTULULATEWHINE...th at amount 6 can also be represented by the symbols 2 and 4, or 3 and 3, and 5 and 1, and 6 and 0. Also don't forget there is also the handy dandy know-it-all calculator, and the computer. Rosie O'doughnuts vouches for them and asks who needs to learn math the hard way?

BLAHBLAHBLAHYACKYACKYACKFARTGRUNTULULATEWHINE I'm impressed. Most folks think "ululate" is a sound pigs make.

. . .

Come to think of it, they may be right.

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1970:
A logger exchanges a set "L" of lumber for a Set "M" of money. The cardinality of set "M" is 100. Each element is worth one dollar. Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set "M." The set "C", the cost of production contains 20 fewer points than set "M." Represent the set "C" as a subset of set "M" and answer the following question: What is the cardinality of the set "P" of profits?
