Redskins Safety Sean Taylor Dies One Day After Being Shot in His Home
Tuesday, November 27, 2007

MIAMI — Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died early Tuesday, a day after he was shot at home. He was 24.

Family friend Richard Sharpstein said Taylor's father told him the news around 5:30 a.m.

"His father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and thanked me," said Sharpstein, Taylor's former lawyer. "It's a tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful, humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of him. Obviously God had other plans."

He said Taylor died early Tuesday at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where he had been airlifted after the shooting early Monday.

Doctors had been encouraged late Monday when Taylor squeezed a nurse's hand, according to Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' vice president of football operations. But Sharpstein said he was told Taylor never regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital and that he wasn't sure how he had squeezed the nurse's hand.

"Maybe he was trying to say goodbye or something," Sharpstein said.

Taylor was shot early Monday in the upper leg, damaging an artery and causing significant blood loss.

Miami-Dade Police were investigating the attack, which came just eight days after an intruder was reported at Taylor's home. Officers were dispatched about 1:45 a.m. Monday after Taylor's girlfriend called 911. Taylor was airlifted to the hospital....http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,313041,00.html

Is there any description of the intruder? I'll bet if they have one, they won't tell anyone.

Taylor, who is in his fourth season as a free safety for the Redskins, was selected fifth over all in the 2004 National Football League draft after playing for the University of Miami. The Redskins signed him to a seven-year, $18 million contract, and he was widely considered to be one of the toughest and best young safeties in the league.

His fierce style of play earned him the nickname Tha Hitman. He was selected for the Pro Bowl last season and surprised viewers and players during that usually well-mannered contest by leveling a punter.

Although he did not play since spraining his knee during a Nov. 11 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Taylor led the Redskins this season with five interceptions.

Because of his injury, Taylor did not travel with the team to its game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday, said William Norman, the Redskins' director of public relations.

Tragic. That's why my house is protected by Smith & Wesson.

Would you be so kind as to clarify what you meant with that remark?

You can take the hoodlum out of the hood, but not the hood out of the hoodlum.

On the news, he was reportedly a drug dealer as a kid and other things related to gang activity.

I_c probably meant that Taylor was on the wrong side of the law quite a bit of the time till recent years. He seemed to have cleaned up his act in the last year or so (after his girlfriend had a baby girl).

After this, I will find it very hard to fault anyone for shooting a burglar--even if the intruder is unarmed (not that I didn't find it hard to fault a burglar shooter already).

The guy bragged he was "thug life" and acted like it almost his whole life. He made a big deal out of it while at UM. Now after a few people say over the last year he changed, we should feel sorry for him.
Its ironic to say the least.
I will not be shocked if there is more to this.

Understood.. I did not know much about the man before this news story, and if that's the case (about his background) then his demise, while untimely, wasn't exactly unusual. I do find it tragic all the same.

My apologies if my question sounded harsh. I was just thinking that here is another dead kid and right away some people start to make suppositions. I was doing the same, when you get right down to it.

We'll all likely learn many more details about the case as it develops.

Regardless of what all those may be, I fervently hope that the killer is apprehended, given due process, and if found guilty, executed in a timely manner.

I hope he left a hefty life insurance benefit for his baby.

No apology required, it wasn't taken in a negative way.
I also hope they find the guy/girl who killed him. I hate waste and his death is both tragic and a waste.
My big gripe with guys like this is simple. I tried to play pro sports and didn't make it, so when I see someone who has been given the gifts he was, and acts like a jerk making millions playing a kids game it angers me.
