.....US falls to 12th place....

BRASILIA (Nov. 27) - Iceland has overtaken Norway as the world's most desirable country to live in, according to an annual U.N. table published on Tuesday that again puts AIDS-afflicted sub-Saharan African states at the bottom.

Rich free-market countries dominate the top places, with Iceland, Norway, Australia, Canada and Ireland the first five but the United States slipping to 12th place from eighth last year in the U.N. Human Development Index.

But the index, blending 2005 figures for life expectancy, educational levels and real per capita income, finds that all 22 countries falling into its "low human development" category are in sub-Saharan Africa, with Sierra Leone last.

Ya know I've always thought of Norway, Iceland, and Canada as rich free-market nations... That's why they have such impact on global politics...

One wonders if we could get the UN Building transferred to one of those top tier comfy locales...

Iceland named best country to live in....

I'm sure the Icelanders agree, especially when the temp falls into -50 range and icicles form beneath the nose in record time.

Regarding Africa, the UNners who put this list together are obviously racist. Sierra Leone is no worse a place to live than Trump Towers.

Iceland? Freezing temperatures? Penguins? Well, I'm sure Icelanders call that sort of thing 'home.'

Me? I'll take the US of A over any other country in the world ANYTIME.

Ever been to Alaska? Most beautiful state in the country in my honest opinion, and I've been to some beautiful states. Tennessee and Kentucky come to the front of my mind as some beauties.

Some, actually a lot of people love the colder weather temps. I would love Texas if it weren't Hot, hotter, and hell all year round. I'm from Corpus, so I've felt that humidity.

Never been to Iceland, but heard it is very pretty. I'm sure it isn't as cracked up to be as it is in this article, but I'm sure it's nice.

In the end, I enjoy living in the states. I would visit another country for a couple of years just to experience a different way of life, but in the end where else do you get as many economic freedoms as we do?

It's more about longer life spans, lower infant mortality, higher literacy, than the average temperature...

....and for the record there are no penguins in Iceland....

And what makes you think your opinion is of the slightest interest to me?

Might I politely ask why some people are so annoyingly argumentative? One cannot make the slightest comment without the multiculturalist, equal opportunity know-it-alls immediately feeling the urge to inflict their "infallible" opinion on you.

Iceland is a frigid hellhole and I wouldn't live there if I was paid to do so. Penguins or no penguins. Regardless of how beautiful and idyllic it was. PERIOD (a.k.a I'm entitled to my opinion; stuff yours).

I've lived in several countries as well, and I still maintain that the US is the best to live in.

I think there is one important factor that they're neglecting while ranking the "best" countries to live in... The right to bear arms. That (personally) is the biggest reason why the US beats out the majority of other countries.

Somehow, I don't think the UN are figuring that in. If anything, they probably consider that a negative factor...

What does that say about the desirability of living here? Since Iceland is paradise on Earth, where is the far longer queue for people seeking to live there?

Economy - overview: Iceland's Scandinavian-type economy is basically capitalistic, yet with an extensive welfare system (including generous housing subsidies), low unemployment, and remarkably even distribution of income.

Who really cares what the U.N. thinks or the nice little H.D.I, lol. I have heard so many people here claim that they hate the U.N. and it needs to go away or we take it back. Well to the people who want it to go away if you dislike them so much do not give any credience to their stupid and biased opinions. For Godsakes look at the top 3, hmm ring of socialism? Yes, Iceland is a nice country, "TO VISIT." Living there? Oh, hell no! The locals are often boarish boobs who teeter on neanderthalism. Take away their "eco tourism" and their fishing nets and you have Sierra Leone except with alot of ice cubes. They do not have a military because they cannot afford one, not because they do not need one. Their population is taxed almost as heavy as Norway's or Canaduh's. Icelandic's pay almost 25% state tax and about 13% on local tax. So, their per capita income is $38,000, after taxes they have roughly $23,000. Wow!! The Mecca of industry and development for the worker. From most of this you can derive that Icleand is at most an atypical 2nd world Democratic/Socialist European state. Hardly the model for #1 status that every other country should be looking to for its own development. I am often unimpressed and bored with U.N. reports and this one is a fine example.

There's a long wating line to immigrate into the US. What does that say about the desirability of living here? Since Iceland is paradise on Earth, where is the far longer queue for people seeking to live there? Nobody is saying the US isn't desirable to live in. Relative to the rest of the world we are doing very well and our liberal economic policies make it a great place to make it. And while Iceland may not have a long line of people waiting to get in, Australia does. Either way though it doesn't change the number of the HDI.

I know why Iceland appeals to you parasitic libeRATs. From the above-linked page ...

Socialism = utopia.
Whatever. I'm quite happy living in America but I would think that this list might shine a light on some areas we, as a nation might seek to improve upon (such as basic literacy, infant mortality etc). Instead of knee-jerk bad-mouthing other nations that have their act together perhaps we could use their success to motivate ourselves?
Oh, no..it's just easier to chant "USA! USA!" and ignore the truth...

Not at all. But i'm saying it's not the best indicator of overall quality of life. Of course we have a great standard of living compared to the majority of the world, but then again, you don't see droves of Swiss or Aussies beating down our doors to become US citizens.

Being a bit of a nerd here, but the Icelandics are not true Scandinavians. They are a homogeneous blend of the Nordics and Celts. The are not even considered to be a Scandinavian country, that is Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. They are considered however to be part of the Nordic states, which those three are part of also. But that is all semantics, ye-hup, they got some hotties in that part of the world, wooohoooo!

At the end of the day, I think most of us can agree the United States is a great place to live. I've lived in quite a few states, we moved to Houston, then Corpus Christi, Texas, and then Taylor Mill, Kentucky (right by Cincinnati, Ohio) and now Chicago. Out of all these places, including Poland which I have lived in for a while (I'm Polish), Kentucky is the most beautiful place I have lived in. Nothing beats the rolling hills. America in general has a lot of freedoms that most countries do not have. This includes economic freedoms. Poland is currently working on reforms, but many citizens are still taxed ridiculously. France is worse, so is Britain, both of which I have been to.

I like Alaska a lot though.

If you don't want to go all the way to Reykjavik or even Halifax Nova Scotia, about 40 miles north of Winnipeg is Gimly, Manatoba, an Islandic community on the banks of Lake Winnipeg a film location spot. A very nice, small, clean and inexpensive place to vacation, aye.

Iceland is a great place to live--until you realize the extremely cold winters (why do you think there are a lot of glaciers on the island?) and the fact there are several active volcanoes on the island. The place truly defines the phrase Fire and Ice.

Infant mortality is a singularly lousy measure of a country's excellence when you look at what actually happens. Iceland -- in fact, all the Scando countries -- have largely homogeneous populations that have kept pace with modernity, have all their shots, understand about kids needing to be held and loved, etc. All this impacts directly on infant mortality.

In the United States, on the other hand, infant mortality rates get pulled down by the ignorance of immigrants (legal or not) from Haiti, the Philippines, Africa, Arabia, Latin America, and other places. Infant mortality rates among pregnant women from these groups are ungodly. Iceland doesn't have this phenomenon. No Western nation does where immigration is a minor thing.

If the United Nations loves these socialist Europeans countries so much why dont they take their headquarters there.

Speak for yourself. To each his own. I only think the USA is a great place to live because of Kentucky, Tennesee, Alaska, and some other beauties. I don't base great places to live on mortality rates, or even damned politics. If I could pick a country to live in, I would probably live in lower Poland near the mountains. Bear hunting, hiking everyday, etc. THAT, to me at least, brings solice. There aren't Muslims in Poland either.
