View Full Version : Greatest Band Ever

I think the greatest band ever is Social Distortion. For adults that don't know a thing about that band, let me explain it to you. They're like the Johnny Cash of our generation.
Just read the lyrics to the "Ball and Chain" song:

Well its been ten years and a thousand tears
And look at the mess I'm in-
A broken nose and a broken heart,
An empty bottle of gin
Well I sit and I pray
In my broken down Chevrolet-
While I'm singing to myself
There's got to be another way

[Chorus:]
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain
I'm lonely and I'm tired
And I can't take any more pain
Take away, take away
Never to return again
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain

Well I've searched and I've searched
To find the perfect life-
A brand new car and a brand new suit
I even got me a little wife-
But wherever I have gone
I was sure to find myself there-
You can run all your life
But not go anywhere

[Chorus]

Well I'll pass the bar on the way
To my dingy hotel room-
I spent all my money
Been drinkin' since half past noon-
I'll wake there in the mornin'
Or maybe in the county jail-
Times are hard getting harder
I'm born to lose and destined to fail-
[Chorus]

"Ball and Chain" was written by one of the band members in prison. All of them have been to prison, did drugs, and somehow got their lives back together. Every fan of theirs thinks they're the Johnny Cash of our generation because of that.
If you want to hear this song, go on to YouTube and search "Social Distortion Ball and Chain"
What band do you think is the greatest band ever? Keep in mind, you have to choose one and only one.

Hardly. There really is not formula for, "greatest band ever", you could do it by categories, like generation, genre, best lead singer, guitarist, etc.

You probably aren't that much younger than me, and while Social Distortion might be your favorite band, to give them the title of greatest band of all time is a little over the top. Personally, Nirvana is one of the greatest bands of all time to me, and most respected music critics, and I could easily argue the generation category and genre of music as well.

Failed crossdressers? They were a cool rock band that dressed like klingons! How can you go wrong with that?

Indeed. They definitely had a sci fi background. With a twist of course. Gene was on a back stage procreation regimin after every landing to increase his alien seed. It was the full-on carnie circuit, from town to town, except no Zipper ride.

You know, I was going to ask for your hand in marriage ever since your 'groovy' post, but since you and I are both married (me with children) is it okay if we're just distantly cool admirerers of each other's work?

I have no idea who "Social Distortion" is, nor do I know if I ever heard anything done by them. But when you have to call a band "our generations (insert other band or artist here)..." that suggests to me that they are nothing more than an attempted imitation of who everyone compares or likens them to.

If the band was as good as you claim them to be, you wouldn't have to refer to or liken them to another artist, they should be good enough to make a name for themselves.

Actually, your comment says more about Johnny Cash than it does about Social Distortion. You comment says that Social Distortion tries to be your generation's Johnny Cash, but ultimately, they can not. Only Johnny Cash could be your generations Johnny Cash.

As for Sara and Czech's picks... I like both of those bands. Though I prefer Kiss more than Nirvana. Kiss has been around a long time, they payed their dues, and contrary to popular belief, they have never been a "pro-drug" metal band. In fact, one of their members was removed from the band because of his drug use. Though he is now back in the band (Ace Frehley), it was not until after he was clean and sober again that he was welcomed back.

Kiss has always been more about the Fans and the Show, and they have never taken their music or their on stage persona's seriously. It was and is nothing more than their Job. Though it's a job they all enjoyed.

They have always been good natured about the rumors and the assumptions made about them. They've never started any rumors about themselves for publicity, but they have also never defended themselves against the rumors. The rumor that their name KISS was actually an anagram for "Knights In Satan's Service" was one that always amused them. According to an interview with Gene and Paul, the name for their band was chosen during a trivial conversation they were having, they started throwing random words out as band names, and Paul said the word "Kiss" and after a few more words, Gene said "go back a bit... Kiss.... I kind of like that." There was no "Devil Worship" or "Satanism" involved in the band or their personal lives.

Nirvana on the other hand, they started out a grunge band, and they remained a grunge band. I like some of their songs, but the band itself was nothing special. Though they tried to play on the "youth angst" factor far too much. The fact that the bands front man, Kurt Kobain took his own life with a shot gun to the head just tells me that he was a weak individual, and the band itself was nothing special.

Now, if you want to talk about great bands, then there are 3 that earn that title in my opinion. People do not liken them to other bands. These are bands that others are compared to. These are bands that set the standards for other bands to be judged by. I personally think THAT is what makes a band note-worthy. THEY are the bands that other bands try to emulate, but ultimately fall utterly short.

Actually, I didn't forget The Beatles. They are definitely up there, and they are in my list of favorite bands. But I only listed the top 3. The Beatles would fall probably 4th, or tied for 4th with a few other bands, the likes of Jethro Tull, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble, and a few others.

The only thing they did Johnny Cash related was do a remake of "Ring of Fire" (which was a terrific remake). It's the majority of the fans that consider them that.

Which reinforces my point. It doesn't matter if they never did a cover of a Johnny Cash song. If, as you say "the majority of the fans consider them" their generation's "Johnny Cash", the band is not original. If they were original, the majority of their fans would consider them "their generation's Social Distortion". You see what i am getting at?

Take your writing for example.

Would you rather have people say "His writing is good, and truly unique", or would you rather everyone look at your work and say "he's a young Dean Koontz"?

If you're serious about being a writer, you would want your work to stand on your OWN merit, not how well you emulate another writers works. Would you rather be an Author, or a carbon copy of another author?

If you can't discuss a band based on THEIR work, and THEIR sound, without saying "they're a lot like..." then the band you are discussing is nothing but an imitation of that other band.

But that's just my opinion.

Minni's got a nice voice and all, and she sure can hit that F, but if you wanna vote on female artists with the best voices... there's no beating:

You haven't lived until you've seen a live 9-minute Neil Peart solo. The guy's got, on his set, somewhere in the league of 8 or 9 tom-toms, 4 or 5 different cymbals, and just about any percussion instrument there is.

No, Bonham never did a nine minute drum solo like Neil Perts. Bonham never got tired and wimped out that soon. He often did 20 to 30 minute drum solos that made Neil Pert look like an ammature...

His famous drum solo, first entitled "Pat's Delight", then "Moby Dick", would often last for half-an-hour and regularly featured his use of bare hands to achieve different sound effects.

I saw Hatchet (New Year's Eve Concert -- KICKIN'!), but unfortunately never got the opportunity to see Skynryd (although, the band used to play in my grandparents backyard in Jacksonville [before my time, of course] ... they went to the same school as my father, and the teacher the band was named for was my father's teacher!)

To me, the greatest band is one that has unity of spirit, soul, musicality, and mission. These two groups had that and more. Ahhh for the good old days, :smirky:.

I too like Hatchet. I like most southern rock. I even listen to 38 Special. Charlie Daniels can bend strings like no ones business. Country Turned Rock... David Allen Coe one of my favorite felons. Jackyl... anyone that can make use of a chain saw as a musical instrument gets my vote.

As for Skynyrd, I used to like them, and I guess I still do in a small way. But where I live, I'm surrounded by the stereo types. The Skoal chewing, mullet wearing, sister marrying red-necks, and they seem to believe that Skynyrd is the only band that has ever released a CD. You can only listen to "Sweet Home Alabama" so many times before you're praying for a nuke to be dropped on Birmingham.

It wouldn't be so bad, but for pity sake, I know even a red-neck is aware that Skynyrd has written a few OTHER songs, do we have to have a 3 day "Sweet Home Alabama" marathon every week? And it's not just the inbred masses playing with the cow turds in the fields either. The so called Rock Radio Stations around here, they have the same deficiency in musical taste. They have a 10,000 cd library which apparently consists of 1 Charlie Daniels Greatest Hits CD and 9,999 Sweet Home Alabama CD Singles.

It has gotten to the point that I have been sending fan mail, NOT to the band, but to their families, enclosing condoms in each envelope so that we can hopefully, some day, end the insanity.

If you like Social Distortion, I highly recommend these:

-Flogging Molly (basically all Irish punk is good)
-NOFX
-Pennywise
-Rancid

All are excellent punk bands.

And speaking of the maniacs....

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AKSJLop26yI&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AKSJLop26yI&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

And when a K-Mart refuses to sell one of their new CD's, they do what any red-neck long haird rock band would do. They load all their gear onto a flat bed, and do a free concert in their parking lot. :)

Question. Why is it okay to shorten Molly Hatchet to just Hatchet? Why not shorten it to 'Molly'?

I listened to Molly.

Yes, we are :smirky:.

As for shortening the name, didn't it sound "cooler" coming from my keyboard to say "I saw Hatchet" than to say "I saw Molly"? I mean, if I said that, considering my rep here as "the nice one," folks might think I'm talking about http://www.retrobug.com/bigcouch/pictures/tn_012_jpg.jpg (from The Big Comfy Couch). :D

Okay. For me this is an easy question. The Moody Blues, of course!
But I also agree that Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Metallica, The Who, Van Halen, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Boston and The Eagles are all phenomenal bands. But to me nobody beats the Moody Blues.
Another classic that was mentioned was Aerosmith. I like one of their old songs, and that's about it. Today they sound sleazy, and with no musicality at all, if there is such a word.
I've never heard of Social Distortion or Neil Peart, and I have no idea who they are.
As for Kiss, well I started listening to music late in life (at around 17 or so), and they were not played on the radio, so I had no exposure to them at all. I heard about them because of their stage presence with all their costumes and makeup, but I never even heard one of their songs. I too heard that Knights in Satan's Service rumor. I heard it when some guy came to the Christian school I attended, and did a talk about secular music and its ties to Satanism and the Occult. At that time I was completely unfamiliar with any kind of pop or rock music. (I grew up in a household where my parents played church hymns or Classical on the stereo, and that was it.)
But when I first heard Nights in White Satin when I was 17, I had to find out who did it, and then I bought the casette of the album it was on, right away. Now I have everthing they ever did, on LPs and casettes, and a small collection of CDs, including that massive box set that came out years ago, plus some rare compilations and everything Justin Hayward ever did in solo work, on LP and CD.
I also like Iron Butterfly.
P.S.- I've only heard of about half of what Wyatt mentioned.

Flogging Mary? That screams Ireland alright.

Isn't it funny that nobody's mentioned anyone in the sucky Rap genre? It doesn't involve skill.

Just say this to a drum beat and you're a rapper:

Did Bonham ever do a nine-minute solo like Peart's?

Not that it should matter but I have multiple recordings of "Moby Dick" in excess of 27 min.

So yes, he did do a nine minute solo (plus 18 min)

Also, with his hands during the majority

EDIT: lol Gonzo, we basically said the same exact thing.

I never thought I would get old.

Ooooooold.

Just never thought it would happen, but it looks like I have arrived.

I just realized that I stopped listening to bands just about the time the Beach Boys began to fade from popularity.

Since that time, from perusing this thread it seem that bands have become very uncivilized.

I found a great band that started Conservative Punk. No CD yet, but they have some of their songs on their MySpace page.

Wait, they didn't start Conservative Punk.

The Ramones started punk and one of them was a die-hard Conservative. So, does that count, at all?
