New Thompson Ad: The Iowa Message

By Ariel Alexovich (http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/author/aalexovich/)
Republican candidate Fred D. Thompson makes his case for why he’s the hands-down most conservative, “Reaganesque” choice for Iowa caucus-goers in a new TV spot.
In the 30-second ad, “Substance,” the former Tennessee senator admits evidence — citations from the Wall Street Journal and National Review — to try to prove that he’s the “clear conservative choice.”

I think Fred's timing is perfect... The Iowa race is hot and now is the time to drive that point home and establish his position as the Conservative candidate for the remainder of the primary election... And if any of the other candidates want to challenge his claim that just forces them to do what he has proposed all along - To debate him one on one...

I agree. Fred's timing is brilliant. I really hope he pulls it off.

Oh, so do I, guys. But $80,000 is a whopper of a lot of money. :(

I sincerely hope Fred makes it. He really is the best choice we have, IMHO.

Not quite as much now, Maggie. :smirky:

Just got done pumping a bit more into the tank.

You're all welcome to take a turn as well if you like:

Interesting, more and more, I have been watching blogs succumb to his charm. A bunch I go to are throwing mad support to him. This is a very interesting phenomena. I knew he would capitalize on the internet, but this was beautiful timing.

I just wanted to send a quick note to let you know that we've more than exceeded our goal of $248,846, and raised over $266,000. We issued a bold challenge, and you responded in kind. Our new ad 'Substance,' which began running today, will stay on the air in Iowa statewide through the Caucus on January 3rd. Thank you very much to everyone who contributed. It means a lot to Fred while he's in Iowa campaigning hard.

If you haven't gotten a chance to watch the new ad yet, you can view it here (http://www.fred08.com/virtual/substance.aspx).

Thanks for everything you're doing for the campaign,

He sure is doing things HIS way, ain't he? I've been saying for a couple months (or more) that he's gonna surprise a LOT of people...

An unconventional primary calls for unconventional tactics - you're right, especially with regards to Iowa and NH. timing is everything. Thompson's been parked in Iowa for days now, here comes the intensive media blitz.

I still think Romney will win there and Huckabee's freefall in the polls will start up and it's too late for him to even try to correct it. This is why I think this re Iowa:

60% of those saying they support Huckabee say their support is definite.

They're going to bolt and have to go somewhere. I think the commercial "Substance" was on theme, since both Romney and Huckabee are seen as "style over substance" types. You need both.

Another point Thompson should address:

Among men, Huckabee is at 23%, Romney 28%, McCain 11%, and Thompson 11%.
Among women, Huckabee is at 23%, Romney 37%, McCain 11%, and Giuliani 9%.

Why the gender gap between Fred and Mitt? I don't see it out here at all.

I think internet campaigning (not fundraising) is counterproductive.

Oh, I'm so glad! We contributed to Fred, but what with buying a house and Christmas, we can't spend one more dime ... not w/o going bankrupt.

Good for Fred!
