I just got a new phone bill for this month and noticed a strange charge that made my bill much higher than usual. It stated on the bill Partial Month Local Serv. 03/19-6/30.......$40.73
Of course I was thinking WTF, and called the phone company. She said they were losing money for the past 6 months for not charging me for what she called a MI Access Line, and by FCC regulation, they could only charge me for 3 of the 6 months.
Have you ever heard of such a thing? I own and operate two small businesses, and I can only imagine the response from a customer if I were to say to them that I undercharged them 3 months ago and they will be getting a bill. My mistake would be my misfortune. Yet, these huge utility companies have this type of protection?
After no luck with understanding this charge from my local phone company, I have contacted the Utilities Commission to see if this is legal, etc. One of their analysts are looking into it after the 4th.
However, I did find out through this unfortunate charge by talking to the NC Attorney General's office that other utility companies, such as Duke Power can go back 2 years in their billing and charge you for it. So, I guess us American consumers are just sitting ducks wonderin' when they are gonna nail us anytime they like??
