View Full Version : Boomers are about to collect
Greg Witt was born in January 1946, raised on Elvis, served two years in the U.S. Army and retired after 38 years of working for Allen-Bradley in Milwaukee. Now, he is on the cusp of turning 62 and reaching another milestone - receiving Social Security.
"It's kind of like another step in your life," he says. "It feels kind of good, all these years of working and contributing and I get something back."
Witt is among the first of 78 million baby boomers poised to enter the Social Security retirement system in the coming decades, the beginning of the so-called Silver Tsunami of aging yet energetic Americans. Boomers born from 1946 to 1964 haven't just grown up, they've grown older and are ready to make an imprint on the American way of retirement.
This year, 2008, the oldest boomers will turn 62.

Boomers born from 1946 to 1964...
 Whatever moron wrote that needs to get his facts straight. I was born in 1956, & I'M NOT A BOOMER. The baby boom subsided around 1950. The "silver tsunami" will crest long before I can receive social security.

The baby boom is commonly considered to have run 1946-1964. You are a boomer.

I'm not counting on SS. It'll be fine if I get it, but I prefer to stand on my own two feet if possible.

So do I Rhino, but it is your money. You paid into this crappy socialist system. Had I invested on my own what I have put in to SS up to now I'd retire.

You don't wanna retire. Retirement's boring. If you like your job, stay at it until they throw you out.

I hafta say that has merit. I spent several months off for medical reasons, and still got paid. It was kinda fun for the first two or three weeks, but I was bored to tears after that. I couldn't wait to go back to work. Of course, if I managed to retire with lots of income, that would be a different story. Then I could afford to travel and do all kinds of other interesting stuff.

Even that gets boring. After awhile you feel like you're just spending money for no good reason.
I went back to work and haven't regretted it at all. I intend to go out with my boots on, so that if I go to the wrong place I can kick ass.

I hoping to get to the point where I can just do something part time. I have practically no hope of retiring rich. I probably won't need the job for money, but it will give me something to do.

And I don't have a problem with spending money for no good reason.

 I'm with The_Elucidator, & I'm NOT a boomer. I don't care that some slow-witted moonbat has arbitrarily decided that I am. I have very little in common with actual boomers.

You're right. I just had three weeks off and couldn't wait to go back.

I've observed that professional people can't usually handle more than a week off before they're itching to get back to work.

I get kinda antsy during summer, but that's probably real ants. Fire ants. Crawl up my legs and sting like crazy.

Yep, we have a cold front coming down, temps in the 30's tonight and 7-8 foot swells in the morning. Great surf. I'll be taking a few hours off. Thats the great thing about my job, always easy to get time off or switch shifts. Why retire?

Shy turtle all day!
Nah I'm a sissy. Full wet suit.
The water will be warmer than that though. 55-60 degrees. And it is true that you stay warm while you're in the water. We have no choice down here, its the only time other than hurricanes that we get waves.
Whats worse than the cold is some 12 yo kid caught a 550 pound bull shark two days ago 100 yards from where we surf. But it is one less shark to worry about.
