DES MOINES, Iowa — Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompson (http://www.politico.com/candidates2008/gopcandidates/fred_thompson_candidate.html)’s presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursday’s Iowa caucus.
Thompson’s campaign, which last spring and summer was generating fevered anticipation in the media and with some Republican activists, has never ignited nationally, and there are no signs of a late spark happening here in Iowa, where even a third-place finish is far from assured.

I am expecting a McCain Thompson ticket opposing Edwards, Obama. Can't say I am crazy about the idea, but I think it's going to happen.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Just hours before Iowa voters went to the polls, Republican Fred Thompson denied new reports that he was planning to end his struggling presidential bid before the New Hampshire primary if he does not finish better than third in caucus voting this evening.
“Any speculation as to what I may or may not do is just totally that,” he told CNN’s John Roberts on American Morning Thursday. “It’s obvious that someone in the campaign thought it was to their advantage to put that out. I have never said that. I have never implied that in public or in private. You should take that for what it’s worth.”

I still wouldn't be surprised if one picks the other as VP, no matter who comes out on top. I wouldn't like it, but I wouldn't be surprised.
