I don't know that I ever posted this story before. I probably did, so if you've read it, I apologize. It's a story that never fails to stir the emotions and because these two doggies came in today I thought of their history.

Joe has a beloved old dog named Goldie. An ancient cocker spaniel she is both totally blind and deaf. Joe has been advised to put her down by every vet that has treated her for all those old age ailments. He just couldn't ever bring himself to do it. Joe took Goldie to the park one day. Since she's blind an deaf she doesn't need a leash, she just sits smelling the grass where she is, afraid to take a step.

On this one day, Joe and Goldie were at the park when they were approached by a filthy matted dog so skinny it looked like it had been several days since it last ate. At first Joe was alarmed but the dog did not appear to be threatening at all so he left Goldie to meet the newcomer. The two dogs sniffed one another and appeared to be peaceable and perhaps friends as tails started wagging. Then the new dog did a remarkable thing. It put its shoulder firmly up against Goldie's shoulder and the two of them trotted off. Goldie with the new dog guiding her, shoulder to shoulder, explored the entire park. There wasn't a tree that wasn't sniffed. There wasn't a bench that got in their way. Goldie had a whole world open to her that she didn't even know was there.

When the park outing was over. Joe picked Goldie up and put her in the back of the truck. When he went to get in the truck, sitting by the driver's door was this new dog, filthy, matted and looking pretty hungry. The dog sat there and lifted her paw. Joe says that the dog looked, for all the world, like it was saying "I"ve applied for the job, let's shake on it." He reached down and solemnly shook the dogs paw then opened the door and the dog was first in with a very happy bark of joy.

They came in today, the dog's name is Lady now. She isn't filthy anymore, nor is she matted. She is quite a spectacular American Eskimo, with the whitestest of fluffy white fur. She comes in, her shoulder firmly up against Goldie's, leading her into the shop. When Lady stops, Goldie stops.

This dog saw an opportunity and took it. She made her own way. Goldie is the first and only blind dog I have ever known that has her own seeing eye dog. Lady never leaves Goldie's side.

Dogs really are smarter than people. That's why I respect them more.

Kathy, are Goldie and Lady your dogs?

No, a customer's dogs. Joe's dogs. I just lucky to know them, that's all.
