ScienceDaily (Jan. 28, 2008) —
A new study of worldwide technological competitiveness suggests China may soon rival the United States as the principal driver of the world's economy -- a position the U.S. has held since the end of World War II. If that happens, it will mark the first time in nearly a century that two nations have competed for leadership as equals.
The study's indicators predict that China will soon pass the United States in the critical ability to develop basic science and technology, turn those developments into products and services -- and then market them to the world. Though China is often seen as just a low-cost producer of manufactured goods, the new "High Tech Indicators" study done by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology clearly shows that the Asian powerhouse has much bigger aspirations.

Is this the same "technologically advanced" country that has millions of travellers stranded by snowstorms and blizzards. No trains running and a power grid on the blink?

Unless it is nailed down, it will probably be stolen, or repacked. The rules need to be changed ASAP or we are going to have more problems than we need with ASIA. Now is the time to build / re-arm/ re-emphasize this area of the world.

Maybe someone should call the DoD, and ask them why 8,000 Marines are being relocated from Okinawa, Japan to Guam.

That won't happen as long as China is an authoritarian nation. If the current regime is overthrown and replaced with a representative republic that guarantees personal and economic freedom, then it could probably happen.

As long as Mao's Little Red Book is their Bible, they'll remain a third-world country. IAC, Chiuna must be a quandary for our libs/lefties. On the one hand, they're one of a few surviving communist paradises, which the libs love. On the other hand, they're one of the biggest polluters on Earth, and are firing up new coal plants at a rate of about one a week, thereby pumping out EEEEE-vill CO2, which the libs hate.
Such a dilemma!

It already IS happening.
A master plan is under discussion within the military community there and between the military staff and the government of Guam. It is due to be completed in the spring of 2008 and to cover a period of 10 years.

The island’s benefits are clear: It is sovereign US territory, it is central to numerous possible flash points, it provides strategic depth, and it has space available for a military buildup.
I guess so....

IIRC, it was BillyBoobClintoooon's (in)famous "look the other way so laptops could disappear" policies that jump started China's techno boom (in more deadlier ways than "products and services" too).

Tex nailed it. China will always be second-rate so long as totalitarians run her. Only when men largely run themselves according to accepted rules, does innovation have a chance. That is, self-discipline (which the Chinese have in abundance) with the Rule of Law (which they do not and likely never will have).

I think that is a matter of opinion. It's like saying a group of retarded and anal-retentive orangutans controls the educated and well-regulated citizens of China.

If you ever seen what Chinese achieve after they arrived here from there, you'd not doubt Chinese self-discipline.
Now if they just had some butts and jugs

No, I don't pay attention to ethnic doings, and I don't believe either that Asian students are smarter than Western students, but, what the heck do used cigarettes and containers have to do with the Chinese?

Good for them. Maybe it might teach the left a lesson on what REALLY creates prosperity.
Or most likely not.

The Chinese in areas outside of Chicom control (such as Singapore, Taiwan, and—at least before the Chicom takeover—Hong Kong) have been able to achieve a lot.
Those in the communist "paradise" will always underachieve, since that's what socialism rewards if not in fact demands.

I don't believe either that Asian students are smarter than Western students Not across the board, but I do think Asians have an affinity for math exceeding that of other ethnic groups including whites.

what the heck do used cigarettes and containers have to do with the Chinese Not much, but it's still a shame that Chinese women as a rule go around almost assless and boobless. That's in fact characteristic of Orientals.

It could be a culture thing. I don't believe for a second it's inborn.

I guess you can't say Hillary is "assless," since she's married to one. However, you could say she's "boobless"—unless, again, you count the one she's married to.
