The first day took a different course than many expected, seemingly orchestrated by establishment Republicans. Knowing that Republicans are loyal dogs that liked to be kicked for love, McCain had a number of GOPers, mainly conservative sell outs and special causers, endorse him.
Day 1 Summary:
Romney removed the last hope for conservatives so as to deflect a real fight. Dick Armie gave some stupid remarks dissing Ann Coulter for not being a Cain-Bot. George "Macaca" Allen gave an air-headed speech on National Security (the last refuge of excuse making that gullible GOPers readily buy) and the need for unity.
All bloggers agree that Tom Coburn gave a great speech - so much so that many are calling for his VP appointment. Of course, he pointed out his many disagreements with McCain and being sworn at, but also lauded McCain on his promise to veto any bill with pork. In fact, Coburn was McCain's only really impressive endorsement.
McCain also gave a good speech (someone having wisely told him to dump the video comparing him to Reagan). He pointed out some things he is in agreement on: cutting spending, national security, no subsdies for ethanol, etc. He "promised" to always consult with conservative advisor's on issues, but would have to make up his own mind. He suggested that consultation would be a big part of his process (yep, BS...more BS...etc.).
Most of the speaking hall was an even mix of pro and anti-McCain, with the McCain people being front-loaded in the room for robot cheers (and anti-McCain in the other half, in back for equal boos). But in the larger spillover room and hall it was ALL anti-McCain...many carrying signs.
Of course, McCain made lots of promises (lies) about securing the border, keeping tax cuts, national security (STILL not mentioning Islamo fascism), etc.
The bottom line: conservative bloggers were more impressed than they expected and wanted to believe him, but were still unconvinced. Hugh Hewitt suggests it is not enough, but a first step. Malkin remains very skeptical. Malkin pointed out (as did Tammy Bruce) that Coburn is McCain's best point man.
MY ANALYSIS:
The party is pathetic. Like the love starved, the party establishment runs to McCain to hear the words "I love you and need you"...and off come the cloths. Meanwhile McCain the cad is snickering and thinking "they bought it".
The most disloyal and poisonous member of the party wants "unity", and Bush...etc. all run to the gathering trying to stem a growing tide of disgust. Coburn confuses friendship and his own budget cutting as conservatism; Allen is an airhead; Bill Bennett is a neo-con. And Romney is blinded by party loyalty, willing to avoid a convention fight.
Of course, McCain is smart and manipulative. He knows that neo-cons and Chamber of Commerce folk love NO borders, low taxes, and national security. So he provides them the promise on taxes and budget cutting...already being a proven importer of 10s of millions of Mexican nationals.
He has made peace with half the Conservatives and business class by throwing the starved some bones as promises, CLAIMING he will fight to keep tax cuts. NOW his problem is with social and cultural conservatives who know his take on judges (Alito is too conservative) and his love of NO borders and massive new immigration.
So he makes more promises he does not believe in. "He really really will appoint strict constructionists.". "He really will close the border before demanding immigration".
Of course, the spineless sell outs rush to support him BEFORE he is even nominated. Disgusting...in my 35 years of political engagement I have NEVER seen such craven begging for mercy from the enemy.
They hate us...WELL, I hate them. I hate them all. And I hope McCain gets trashed. I hope Allen goes back to babbling about ca-ca in his own cage, I hope Coburn gets beaten by Gov. Henry (D) when he decides to run. And I want Bush gone, the man who FIRST split the party with his love of foreign people's over his own citizens.
Now here is an irony, pointed out by one of the bloggers. McCain swears he will vote against every entitlement, every bit of government pork (e.g. ethanol subsidies) given to US citizens - THIS from the man who wants to give a MASSIVE citizenship and welfare entitlement to 20 million illegals.
I have a sense of shame, I cannot vote for this creep. And I won't, and nor should any of you.
