Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina (and other Republicans) introduced a bill that would strip Berkeley of pork barrel spending.

The Semper Fi Act of 2008 would rescind over $2 million in hidden earmarks for Berkeley in the 2008 Omnibus Appropriations bill, and transfer those funds to the Marine Corps instead.

U.S. Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.) introduced a companion bill in the House of Representatives.

Senate Democrats have so far blocked Republican efforts to advance the Semper Fi Act.

Instead of adjourning at the end of the day as usual, the Senate "recessed" twice last week, a move that slows the process of adding new bills to the calendar, The Hill newspaper reported.

"The only reason to recess is to block something, and the thing that got blocked by Reid's stall tactic was the Semper Fi Act," said Sen. DeMint's spokesman Wesley Denton. "Democrats have chosen not to defend the Marine Corps, but to pander to anti-war protesters and Berkeley officials that are actively trying to impede military recruitment."

Reid's office says the recess was called, not to block Semper Fi, but to give Democrats the flexibility to map their floor strategy on various bills.

You and I know that senator Reid only does what he wants and that he could care less about our military, this is the man who stood up in senate and declared the war lost and he simply cannot have it appear that the American people love their troops so he must hide that fact any way he can I say we call and email so much and so often that they have no way to hide our pride in our military and we demand that any city that turns their back on our military is subject to the Semper Fi Act. Let’s let them know loud and clear that we the people of America expect them to work for us and as such they must pass the Semper Fi Act, Call 1-866-340-9281 it is toll free it will not cost you a penny and you can talk to your senator or if you have the time call them all and I don’t care if you live there they are deciding on an issue that affects all Americans and with that being the case they work for us all because our tax dollars go to pay them so make them listen.<O:p</O:p

I do not know about you but I have had enough of crap being shoved down my throat and being expected to like it I say this is a citizens revolt, it is time we stood up to those who would have us believe we have no voice in how our country is run from elections to our military we will fight back, this battle has just begun and we have yet begun to fight so call 1-866-340-9281 and do it now, Semper Fi

The earmark-cut won't pass because it sets a precedent that almost all of them fear. It was a brilliant gesture, though.

I am surprised that no one has introduced a simple clearly worded Resolution supporting the Marines and condemning any action to exclude them from the community. (Maybe they have. I have not heard of it.)

That does not involve money or committee action and would be harder to block.

I called Senator DeMint's office and they were very sweet. I also called my local Senator's office, Lugar, and the woman had a hard time "supposedly" understanding what I was saying. I finally had to spell Semper Fi for her. Geeze, and I don't slur my speech.......

Yesterday, I read somewhere on the internet that the 2008 Semper Fi bill was picking up momentem. However, I can't remember the link but the story said that all Pubs in the Senate took a quiet stand in support of it, but that Reid used some sort of procedural thing to keep it from coming the floor for debate. Now I'm paraphrasing and badly at that; I wish I could remember that darn story. In other words what I'm trying to say is that the bill is getting some good attention. Keep up the pressure. :)
