View Full Version : What Do You Think?

I have a lot of issues at the moment that keep bugging me everytime I write a story. Frankly, I'm tired of them, so I wanted to get your ideas on how to defeat these mental blocks.

1: Villians
It always bugs me when my mind thinks of stuff like You've written a monster story, now write a ghost story. And if it's not a ghost story, it's a stalker story, and the list goes on. This keeps me from writing some great ideas. It's been annoying the hell out of me.

2: Ideas
I know that it's not the idea itself that's original, it's the way you create it, but some of my ideas have been already done... mostly by Stephen King. My last story reminded a lot of people of Stephen King's "Secret Garden, Secret Window" which I've never read until after I finished it. It pissed me off because I felt guilty and kept calling myself stupid afterwards.

3: Signs of Possible Violence
My 6th grade teacher told me that the level of violent content in my work reflects that I want to shoot everyone up in the school. Now, when I'm writing stories, I start to question myself why I write what I write. Why can't I write adventure or thrillers? Why do I have this attraction to horror? This can drive anyone nuts.

I have to go, but I want your opinions on this ASAP. I will post more later.

Take a valium and a shot of Tequila. Your mind is on overdrive. Write what you know.

I can give you the basic response first, and the metaphysical response after. Your attraction to horror is just like a habit, good or bad. As long as you do not allow it to rule your morals, don't worry about it.

And now the other response--

In your previous life or lives, you must have beem exposed to real horrors. In this present incarnation, your mind has many past memories to sort through and discard or keep, for your next incarnation.

Chill. Pick one.

I see you believe in reincarnation too. Man. We could start a whole thread on that subject. I have 4 dreams, and that's all. I've had them as long as I can remember. Past lives echoing to the present? I think so.

Reincarnation? Are you serious?

Reincarnation? Are you serious?

I believe in it. God's plan for us expands far beyond what we can comprehend.

My father talked about it. Where he picked it up, who knows? I was just mentioning it as something different.

I don't believe in reincarnation, only because I'd turn into like a flower or a bullet. TR, you might be addicted to horror because of how things are in your surroundings.

Here is adivce I got a long time ago... write what you know.

That will help with any problem. If you write about something you can relate to, are familiar with, and even care about you can defeat your writer's block.

What I normally do (since I am writing two books right now) is stop writing all together. Give yourself a two week break. Dont wrote a damn thing... and out of nowhere, when you least expect it... BAM a great idea from something you already know.

I was going to write a book on procrastination. But I kept putting it off.

*cue Rod Serling*You're traveling through another dimension -- a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop:

The Twilight Zone rules!

Anyway, with my major interest in local history, old buildings, churches, cemeteries, and other related stuff, a few people I know keep telling me that I should write a book. Of course in my case it would be non-fiction. Right now I wouldn't know where to start. I don't even have a web page. Actually I have three of them, sort of. One is a Yahoo group that is trying to be a web page, and the other two are souped-up links page. But I need to do better than that. As soon as I get my own computer back I need to start on that. Then the book idea can come later.

I say write in a villain that you want to write about. You're pretty creative. I'm betting you could write in a pretty nasty ghost if you wanted to.

Stephen King has been around awhile so don't feel too discouraged. He's covered alot of subject matter. Here's one he hasn't I don't think. Don't give up.

Oh puuuulllleeeeeeeeeze!! Another stereo typing teacher I see. Hey, I play violent video games online. I guess that means I'm going to go out, play sniper somewhere in town and then use a rocket launcher to blow up the local convenience store!

TR, I'm going to PM you with a story idea I have.
