Some time ago I posted something about an Autistic Savant, named Bruce Kopstein, that I knew in high school for one year. (His parents put him in our school for just one year.)
Okay, so there's this song that I've heard once in a while for a few years now, but I don't know the title or the artist. As it turns out, there's a link to a streaming audio file of "Disability News and Views Radio" from 2005, where the lady talked to Bruce on the telephone, and he played a few songs for her on the piano. His final song just happened to be the very song that I'm trying to identify. So if you don't mind, can you click the second link and listen?

This is the link: http://www.disabilitynewsradio.com/past_shows_downloads.htm

and this is the direct link to the streaming media:
http://www.disabilitynewsradio.com/PastShows/disabilitynewsradio_06-19-2005.ram

The lady started talking to Bruce about 5 minutes in. Then at about 13 minutes in, he plays the song I want you to hear. During this song they start to have a little trouble with the phone connection, and a lady says "hello? hello?". Just disregard that. I'm hoping that someone from this group will recognize the song and be able to tell me the name of it and who the original artist was. Bruce doesn't say before he plays it.

Thanks,
Barry
P.S. - the streaming media is Real media, and opens with the Real player. I'm not sure if other players handle Real or not.

For Real media, I strongly recommend Real Alternative (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm). It plays Real files without the bloatware and spyware of the Real Player.

As for the song, it's unfamiliar. The attached ZIP contains an MP3 of the piano playing, for anyone else who wants to take a stab at it.

I listened, a few times. The sound quality of that clip is just too poor to be sure. At times it seemed vaguely familiar, but with the breaks in sound, and the muted quality, I can't be sure. Sorry.

The song seems to be quite popular and played often on certain radio station, but not the ones I listen to. Thanks for putting a link to the file by itself.

Oh wow, that's it, Elgalad. I knew someone would know. Cool, thanks!
I don't normally listen to that kind of music, but I have to admit I like that song.
Thanks for helping me out with that.

I'm still amazed at your friend's talent. Being able to play something that complex after just Listening to it is simply awe-inspiring.

I know from personal experience how difficult it is to learn to play a musical instrument (never got past the beginner stage :) ) and to learn to read music, so I'm most definitely impressed.

God blessed Bruce with a truly wonderful gift.

It's too bad none of us really knew him. You really couldn't hold a conversation with him, but he did understand when we asked him to play a song. From listening to that phone conversation it sounds as though he has greatly improved in the 28 years since I saw him last. But even then, in 1980, he probably knew thousands of songs, and knew them after just hearing them once. He always told us he knew a song because he heard it on the radio, or his record player or whatever.
Yes, God gave Bruce a wonderful talent. Definitely.

I used to play by ear, but I had to quit for medical reasons. And then I tried playing by fingers and the headaches stopped. Amazing!

I've never liked Real Player since I've been on the internet. I always thought it was over done. I don't see why it has to have its own web browser in it, and why it has to have all those ad banners and commercials running every time you start it up. The only time I like the player is when I play a Real Media file that's already on the computer. When I do that it just uses the player without the web browser and all the annoying junk.
I also have one other big issue with the Real Player- the fact that the volume control on it overrides the master volume control of the computer, meaning if you turn down the volume on the Real Player, the volume is down in all applications, including all other players, and websites that have sound. To turn the volume back up again you have to go back into Real Player and turn that player's volume up again. I hate that, although I've gotten used to it.
I had no idea there was an alternative player. I'll take a look.

Thanks,
Barry
