My class watched a PBS special called "The Persuaders," and it mentioned a company called Acxiom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acxiom), which collects personal information about you. They have thousands of computers in their headquarters which collects anything and everything about your personal life. Supposedly, it's called a "demographic" company to help politicians and telemarketers know where to campaign and sell their message to you.
However (and this is where this thread might go into the conspiracy corridor), I think it could be used(or maybe is used) by people like the CIA so they can track and find individuals. BIG BROTHER is watching...
