A new study suggests cat owners are less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than people who, well, don't own cats.

And no, dogs don't do the same trick.

The study, by University of Minnesota researchers, found that feline-less people were 30 percent to 40 percent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease.

Yet dog owners had the same rate as non-owners. "No protective effect of dogs as domestic pets was observed," said the study, presented Thursday at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans.

Cats are also about the size of a human baby. They're more huggable and more supple than a dog. Plus, cats make human baby-like noises. They stay small and cute. Some dogs can get rather large and bulky.

It's not good news for you if your fully grown Golden Retriever tries to sleep on your chest. lol

Five cats in this household.

I'm trying to take the edge off the cardiovascular damage the two grandchildren are doing to me, buffering it with cats.

I have four cats who drive me absolutely CRAZY. One dog who is my lifeline, and one stray dog that I'm still trying to find a home for.

I don't much care for cats. They are too pretentious and self-important for my liking.

Dogs have masters. Cats have staff.

I have one big 25lb cat. He's not fat, just to clarify... Just really really big. A lot of people mistake for a dog at first.

So that's why you see all these old ladies with a million cats. They're trying to prolong their lives.

My wife and I have three cats. She would love to get a dog but I know I wouldn't want to walk it.

As far as cats being huggable it isn't always true. One of our cats is extremely affectionate and loves to be petted and she will rub up against you. However as soon as you hold her to hug her she will squirm away and do her best to get away from you.

Its always on the cat's terms!!

Yes.

And if you notice, all cat caretakers/owners/staff are always trying to figure out what makes their cats behave, act or react the way they do.

Figure them out.

I would figure this has to do with the personality and lifestyle that is unique to people that prefer cats

if the results are to be trusted

We had one years back that was 33 lbs. Yes, he was just "big." He was hit by a car one morning. Yes, I was upset by it but I cursed the driver and hoped he needed an alignment after that.

One of our three cats likes to sleep ON MY HEAD during the winter.
Mickey, our current cat, does that to my wife. He loves her, is OK with me, tolerates my son and hates, and I do mean hates, everyone else.
He thinks I'm a playmate as he will hide behind a corner, a rumple in the bed spread or whatever and wait till I cross his path. All I see is an eye and an ear. I chase him and we wrestle! It's quite comical.
