As many of you know I speak Russian, but does anyone know of a good online Russian to English translator, preferably one that let's you use Cyrillic encoding > Latin script? I'm searching and cannot find any that are good or work.

CP, I don't know. But I have a Russian friend who I will call tomorrow, to see if he has any resources.

BabelFish (http://world.altavista.com/) does English <> Russian. It's as accurate as any online translator, as long as there are no idiomatic expressions. And as seen, it does handle Cyrillic text (as long as the browser does).

With Firefox, check "Character Encoding" settings. If it's on Unicode, it should work.

Babelfish does a pretty poor job. I've used it to get the "jist" of things, but if you are looking for accurate translations, good luck. I don't think there are any good, free accurate translators (or good translators period).

Once I had some documents that I had to translate to Italian. After using Babelfish, I sent them to the people who needed them and they had no idea what it said. It spit out jibberish, since obviously it doesn't take context into account, so you end up with a word-for-word translation, which can come out unreadable.

Case in point, a simple Spanish translation.

¿Que hora es?
Son las once menos cuarto de la noche. This says:
What's the time?
It's 10:45 at night.

What does Babelfish spit out in English?

That hour is? They are the eleven less quarter at night. It's not wrong, really. The sentence literally says "it's eleven less quarter" but in English you would never say that. I'm going to suspect that the English <> Russian will have the same problems.

I've heard that the Google translator works better. I wouldn't know, I haven't really experimented with it. The downside is that you can only translate websites as far as I know... you can't actually enter information on your own.

I've heard that the Google translator works better. To test them, copy a block of text from a foreign-language site, and see which of them translates it into more acceptable English (if you don't know the language, accuracy checks are of course out). If both translations are the same or very close, they're most likely using the same engine with only minor mods.

No computer-based translators work more than passably well. If the to-be-translated text is formatted using the strict rules of the language, and contains no unusual. ambiguous or idiomatic/slang terms, the translators will most likely do a good job.

It's going to require AI and enormous databases to bring translation to an excellent level.

One reason why computer translation has problems:

Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana.

Czech, have you tried the translator included on your Mac? It should be one of the widgets that pop up when you hit f12.

For word by word translation, I found it somewhat helpful in my Russian courses...

Hahaha, I found it right after I posted this thread.

This thing is so accurate it's sick.

Thank you to everyone for all your help.

Get one of those Russian mail-order-brides ... some of 'em are hot, if you can get over the facial hair and moles.

That'd be like a Russian translator but with benefits.

ROTF!

A translator "with benefits?" The Russkies aren't all bad looking.

I googled "Russian women," opened one dating service (http://www.russian-women.net/), and found the following pictures from different women's profiles. The problem wasn't digging to find women this pretty, it was selecting these pictures from the literally thousands of attractive women. It was like putting a shovel into the ground and lifting it up full of gemstones.

Some benefits!

I can speak Russian, I just wanted something for text typing purposes on my computer.

PS: You're not talking about Russian women, that's more like Mediterranean. Russian girls are among the prettiest in the world.

Czech women are prettier though :)

Some have said that Czech women are the most beautiful in the world.

25 years ago, I had a crush on Paulina Porizkova.

Ten years ago, I thought Daniela Pestova was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.
