CBS is bringing mixed martial arts, the bone-crunching combat sport popularly known as "cage fighting," to prime-time television this spring, the U.S. network said on Thursday.

Branded as barbaric by critics in the 1990s for its lack of rules, mixed martial arts, or MMA, has evolved into a more mainstream sport that bars biting, eye-gouging, head-butting and strikes to the groin.

But fierce punching, kicking, karate, judo and wrestling moves -- with no protective gear -- are still very much a part of the sport.

Professional Pankration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pankration), works for me..

er, long as noone gets huuuuurt.

Right. :smirky:

Seriously though, I always used to wonder why we Don't have rough sports like Rollerball. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073631/) (loved that movie!)

I know some people would get seriously hurt and some would probably get killed on occasion, but how would that be any different really from X-sports, like skydiving, rock climbing, bungee jumping, etc?

A lot of folks watch auto racing now Just to see the crashes, as nasty as that sounds. Violent sports would be no different.

It'd likely never happen in our wonderful nanny state, but a violence afficionado can still dream, cain't he?

Anyways, we've still got ice hockey..

I prefer boxing over boring crap like UFC, but have no problem with it being on primetime, or the sport in general.

I like Ultimate Fighting. I also like that they don't let one guy actually kill the other guy.

Ice hockey can be fun to watch, especially if there's a couple of good fights. Better than "Jerry Springer."
