This is a thread based off of a dream I had last night.

I was sitting in class when the speaker came on. There was a female voice coming through. She said:
"Repeat after me: Bush is Hitler, Republicans are Nazis, all Republicans are going to hell."

Everyone repeated it... except for me. Next thing I know, I was running away as fast as I could from an angry mob of anti-Bush hippies. I finally woke up when I reached the door of my school.
I've never had a dream like that. I think my mind was reflecting my feeling like I'm the only one that knows what's going on and the rest are being brain-washed.

The fact is that students aren't being taught how to spell or how to do math. They're being taught leftist propaganda. My school isn't entirely like that, but my summer school was. I saw all these teenagers that were brainwashed by leftist propaganda and it really ticked me off.

Public schools are not good for teenagers. That is something that I've learned and it's maybe what my dream reflected.
Anyone else think this?

Unfortunately, most people don't have a real alternative. Private schools are expensive, and homeschooling really isn't very practical for parents with busy lives and work schedules.

Actually, homeschooling is MORE practical for parents with busy lives and work schedules, because it allows them to school on a personalized schedule that works for them. Parents aren't tied to being at the school first thing in the morning and after school to pick up the kids.

That's right, Mom and Dad come home from work, tired, and they have to teach Johnny and Julie math and English. Yep, that's very convenient.

Homeschoolers are free to homeschool in a way that is conducive to their family dynamic. Guess what, they come home from work tired, and they STILL have to deal with their children. Homeschooling is a way of life, not an institutional experience. Sheesh.

That sounds like an excuse for lazy parents to use. You have kids, you are a parent 25 to 30 hours a day, every single day. Get used to it, and if you're not a complete dumbass, teach your kids what they are supposed to learn, and not some fancy pulling a rubber over a banana trick. I served 21 years in the Navy, and I tutored my kids from elementary through high school. I am now tutoring my grandkids, who attend those public indoctrination camps.<!-- / message -->

Ut oh. *Runs for hills with tail between legs* :(

hosl, dont make excuses for your lack of intelligence. It has nothing to do with being a teenager, and you'll learn quickly that people around these parts dont liken to excuses very much.

TR, the public school system is failing dramatically. There are kids in my class that will be graduating that dont speak a lick of English. How so? one might ask. Because they know they dont HAVE to learn it. Total rebellion I say. Anyways, TR, dont let the libs get you down. Just try as best as you can to indoctrinate your friends using the same tactics as your school. I have, and I think I've pretty much turned all my friends to a more conservative stand-point. They have a hard time thinking for themselves at first because they are not used to it, but in time they realized that what the teachers have been telling them is wrong and that they need to open their eyes and see for themselves.

By the way, I think homeschooling or private schools is the way to go.

So, Homes, talk to me.

I homeschooled my firstborn through second grade. Then a charter school opened nearby, and seemed to be lite on the indoctrination and heavy on character and academics. It was so easy... no fighting for rights, no reams of documentation to prove to city officials that I was in fact educating my child, no agonizing decisions about curriculum, no facing the accusations of lacking social development. Both kids have been there now for four years, and they like it there for the most part. They have nice teachers and good friends, but of course also must put up with the bad kids, which is probably a good way to develop a thick skin.

Yet...

There are the silly rules, the crappy lunches, the maniacs in the school parking lot who think the arrows are there to point to them, the sneaky indoctrination and fawning over public figures and popular movements, the need to buy uniforms for rapidly growing boys... and now the state of Ohio has told the school that they weren't allowed snow days like the other schools and must make up the time, even though our days are an hour longer than theirs. They're fighting to get that changed but who knows.

So now I'm torn. I think I could easily convince the younger boy to leave the school, but the older one would be a tough case. But the biggest issue for me would be choosing a curriculum and arranging the day's work in a way that doesn't let me get lazy and make me wonder if I'm really preparing my kids thoroughly and rightly dividing the true educational material from the busy work.

So talk to me.

My lack of intelligence? I go to a public school yes, but my school isn't exactly "federal funded". We get our funding from state property taxes and the school spends 14,000 a student. Yes, fourteen thousand dollars a student. We're one of the best schools in the state, and dare I say it? Region.

My school has a tougher curriculum that in most public schools, for I've done things I only thought that people in public high schools would get to do. But, I made it out just fine.

And my lack of intellegence? Through all this, through all the dealings with the dumb kids and such, I get all A's except for an 89.7 in gym and an 89 in art (which was a semester 1 class).

And fine, I won't bring any excuses in the table.

Sorry hosl, grades don't represent anything anymore having to do with intelligence. They are merely a mark saying that you were willing to kiss ass and do the work. Also, to say that your school is top in the region is not something you should be proud of. Especially when I see people graduating with a 4.0 that can't read.

Here's a link Homes gave me, good stuff there: http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/

Pity, though, that the site uses frames so you can't link directly to a given page very well.

Well that's a shame, they should've been taught. I personally find it funny that we're not improving the curriculum, merely downgrading it so that everyone can pass and the school can get more funding.

I totally agree with you here, hosl. Don't lower the standards of 1,000 just to raise those of 10.
