We have a Junior High Newspaper at my school. They decided to hold a poetry contest and I don't know how to do poetry that well and I wrote one.
Next day, by some sick twist of fate, I won.
Now, they not only want me to write for them but to be an editor. I told them I'll do it. Everyone in the Junior High knows that I want be a horror writer and they want to so badly read my work. They also think I'm like some super-genius because not only do I write fiction but I wear glasses now (that's how teens think).
So, I'm the new editor and apparently a contributing writer for this newspaper. I told the newspaper staff to prepare for a "major pimp-up in the newspaper. They cheered. It was either cheering for me or they were doing that because they fear me.
This might be a good expierence. I am a control-freak. I will reject so many writers that even I'll cry when I write the rejection slips. Don't worry, I won't be that cruel. But, I will not tolerate bad grammar or spelling in this newspaper.
If these people really want to be writers then they have to know what it feels like to get the crushing feeling of getting rejected for the first time. After that, everything else is easy. It's good for them.
I'm happy (I guess). I wish I could put my work in this newspaper but I don't want to get in trouble with the teachers. My stories have the same content as Stephen King's stories. Profanity, violence, and all that jazz. That poem I wrote was nothing compared to what I write in real life...
This calls for the dog in the bannana suit to celebrate (any excuse is necessary!)

Congratualtions, TR.
Put your best foot forward, i.e. really do your best. Editor of a school paper looks good to college admissions. Give it your all, and I'm sure you'll do real well.

Thank You Homes!
I plan on attending Creative Writing as a college class. Not because it's good for me. Not because I think I'll write better. I plan on seeing if all creative writing courses are half as bad as some say they are. Such as this one:
HOW LONG WERE YOU IN THE WRITING PROGRAM BEFORE YOU WERE KICKED OUT? Two years. I submitted two horror stories to get into the writing program; I made no pretense that I wanted to write anything else. What I didn't realize until too late was that the president of the writing program accepted me with the idea that she would cure me and make me want to write what she considered proper writing. She told me that all genre was garbage, but I refused to write anything else. And within two to three weeks, half the class was writing genre—romance, science fiction, fantasy and mystery. But one fateful day before she kicked me out, I asked her, 'What about Shakespeare? A Midsummer Night's Dream is a fantasy. Macbeth doesn't work without the witches and Hamlet doesn't work without the ghosts. What about Dickens? A Christmas Carol is a ghost story.' She called me into her office and told me I would never write for publication. She was determined that I wouldn't go out and do exactly what I've done. I've now corrupted millions [laughs].

I just wonder if the they are half as bad as people say they are. Then again, maybe it depends on what kind of college I attend.

Don't worry. I'll tell my writers to not report all the hot scandals that occur during a sports game.

Congratulations. I was a department editor of our high school newspaper for a year and a half. I loved it. I was in charge of "Amusements;" which basically gave me carte blanc to deviate tremendously from the "news." I invented a school detective (I called him Stupersleuth) and wrote weekly adventures that ranged from uncovering a stolen pencil racket to tracking down a mad bomber (mad because he couldn't afford real bombs). It was a hoot.
Having benefited from many college writing classes, I can honestly tell you that nobody can teach you how to write any more than they can teach you how to think. They can help you with form, grammar and content, but the vision and the originality is yours alone. As an editor, it will be your job to help others. The key is to make sure that you don't end up just correcting their writing, but that you pass on the passion you already have for the art. Writers are artists, and like all artists, they can be moody and emotional.
The true beauty of writing is that it enables you to create characters that take on personalities of their own. After a while they will be easy to use because they will be a part of you and you will be able to see their reality through their eyes. Avoid the adjectives and paint images with verbs. Keep your words enjoyable to read and you will be successful.

I do have a pen name, Nate Darcel. It's the same first name as my real name but I added Darcel to it because Darcel means "dark". Seemed perfect for me.
Here's the problem: teachers know me. And that they'll flip out because a teen is writing about blood, violence, profanity, and occasionally sexual themes (to stay realistic and sometimes to do a commentary on our society).
Trust me, it's not a wise move.
