Yesterday I received a mass e-mail forward from a friend regarding Chavez and CITGO, perhaps you've seen it. If not, here it is:

Verified with

> IN ORLANDO LAST WEEK, AT A CITGO STATION REGULAR WAS
> PRICED AT $2.82 PER GALLON. THERE WERE NO
> CUSTOMERS. HOWEVER, ACROSS THE STREET WHERE I
> FUELED IT WAS SELLING FOR $2.85 PER GALLON AND ALL
> PUMPS THERE HAD CARS WAITING TO FUEL.
>
Have you noticed how the Citgo signs have
> disappeared in the past 7-8 months? Very clever
> move by Chavez. But guess what CITGO IS CHANGING
> ITS NAME TO? This is serious Americans...make sure
> you read.
>
NEWS FLASH:
Chavez is NOW getting a Russian Weapons Factory
> built by Putin. The RUSSIANS are building an AK-47
> Kalashnikov Assault Rifle factory in Venezuela to
> give armament support to Communist Rebel groups
> throughout the Americas
>
Chavez NOW has IRANIANS operating his oil refineries
> in Venezuela for him. It is likely only a matter of
> time, if not already, before Chavez has Iranian
> built LONG RANGE missiles, with a variety of warhead
> types aimed at.... Guess Who?
>
CITGO is NOW in the process of Changing its name to
> PETRO EXPRESS due to the loss of gasoline sales in
> the USA due to the recent publicity of ownership by
> Chavez of Venezuela.
>
Every dollar you spend with CITGO or PETRO EXPRESS
> gasoline will be used against you, your basic human
> rights, and your freedoms. He will start wars here
> in the Americas that will probably be the death of
> millions.
>
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT because Chavez is starting
> to feel the loss of revenue from his holdings. HE
> OWNS CITGO. This is a very important move which
> everyone should be aware of.
>
ANNOUNCED JUST RECENTLY, CITGO, BEING AWARE THAT
> SALES ARE DOWN DUE TO U.S. CUSTOMERS NOT WANTING TO BUY FROM 'CITGO-CHAVEZ,'
HAS STARTED TO CHANGE THE
> NAME OF SOME OF THEIR STORES TO: 'PETRO EXPRESS.'
>
DO NOT BUY FROM 'PETRO EXPRESS'! 'PETRO EXPRESS' IS ALSO 100% OWNED BY 'CHAVEZ.'

> KEEP THIS MEMO GOING SO THAT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT IS HAPPENING.
>
BOYCOTT 'CITGO' AND 'PETRO EXPRESS'.

> MAKE SURE THIS IS PASSED ON TO EVERYONE IN YOUR
> E-MAIL LIST IN THE UNITED STATES AND OUTSIDE OF
> AMERICA! Well today someone replied to that email, somebody I don't know, but I was quite disturbed by the reply. Here it is:

Who is the BIGGER enemy anyway..Saudi Arabia, home of Wahaby Fanatic Muslims and EXXON or CHavez...Get your facts straight before you spread the seeds of HATE...

And, which is worse Fanatic Christians killing innocent children for OIL ..
or Fanantic Jews killing for FUN and LAND..the French killing for Water rights in Africa
or Muslims killing in response to being being RAPED daily by everyone.

Please, get your facts straight and get a LIFE..

Please remove my address from all of your future HATE MONGERING forwards...

Thank You, I love you all, but this HATRED is not good for man or beast..
May the real GOD of PEACE and LOVE prevail. and live in your hearts..and minds..My question: Should I respond to this? I don't know this person, but now because of this mass e-mail he has my e-mail address. I'm very troubled by his reply, and my knee-jerk reaction was to fire off a responding e-mail, but then I thought about it and decided to ask for a second opinion.

Thoughts anyone?

This turd's looking for a fight. I suggest giving the e-mail address to one of the more hardcore members.

I would let it go...unless this jerk emails you again. THEN, have your facts straight - muzzies declaring war on civilization 1400 years ago, the torture of Christians, etc - and let this putz have it with both barrels.

btw - when you do this make sure you hit the "reply all" button so it goes to EVERYONE s/he sent it to.

I did something similar to the president of our city council concerning John Kerry blasting Bush over the "secret" rise in Medicare premiums, should he be re-elected. He had taken less than 15 minutes to absolutely berate me in a "reply all" response. I responded with the FACTS in like fashion and made him look like an idiot. It's been roughly 3½ years now and he hasn't said one word in rebuttal. What CAN he do?

And now, I'm running for city council...should I win, I'll be seated right next to him.

Send him nothing. Don't stoke the fire.

Before you do anything, at least sleep on it. You might think of a clever response, or decide that discretion is the better part of valor and let it go.

My principle with all broadcast emails is to delete them if they're crap or save them if they're useful, but NEVER to forward them. They just add to the interminable flow of junk, and they provide rich mines of valid email addresses for the lists that are sold to spammers.

The sender of the reply might be an arschloch, or s/he might just be tired of receiving this sort of unsolicited email, and vented as a reaction. The best bet is to avoid further communication with that person. If s/he follows up with further messages, a response is in order.

Was it addressed to you individually, or was it a "reply to all" message?

Delete the e-mail address from your address book and let it go.

This person is entrenched in his/her beliefs, and e-mail is not a forum that is designed for an exchange of the magnitude that it would take to make a dent in that kind of skewed thinking.

Just let it go.

And people please post warnings about graphic photos when they post them.

And by the way......

Both Circle K and Petro Express are privately-owned chains of convenience stores, the former an international property of Quebec-based Alimentation Couche-Tard, and the latter owned by The Pantry, Inc., which is headquartered in Sanford, North Carolina. Neither chain is owned by Citgo or the Venezuela government. Although Petro Express outlets did once sell Citgo gasoline, the company stated in October 2006 that the chain would be phasing out sales of that brand by 2007. Soon after The Pantry's acquisition of Petro Express in 2007, the new parent company announced that gasoline sales at those outlets would be converted to Chevron's Texaco brand.

It is not uncommon for independent stations and chains to switch fuel suppliers from time to time. Occurrences of independents' dropping Citgo in favor of other suppliers are often misinterpreted by the public as attempts on Citgo's part to "switch names" in order to fool consumers into continuing to purchase Citgo gasoline.http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/citgo.asp

I want to thank all of you for your thoughtful and insightful replies! WOW, didn't know this thread would get so many responses, but I sure am glad it did.

I did NOT e-mail the jerk back; I was waiting to see what all of y'all said first, and I'm glad I had second thoughts, decided to post this thread, and waited. I will not be replying to him.

I DID however send an e-mail to the person who sent the first (mass) e-mail originally and told her basically the same thing Doc & Rhino shared, that:

1) The SNOPES link in the e-mail did not work so I decided to check it out for myself, and that I usually check ALL such e-mails at least through SNOPES, even if a SNOPES link is provided. And just as I thought, SNOPES said it wasn't true, even thought the e-mail claimed that SNOPES said it was.

2) I would prefer not being on a mass e-mail list. I recommended blind CC, and at the very least cut & paste, not forwarding e-mails.

We'll just wait and see what happens.

Thanks again, everybody!

I sympathize with you Homes - some old friends of my Dads have me on their forward list. One guy called me out of the blue last spring just to ask for my email address, he's never sent me a legitimate email. Just these awful forwards like the one you posted.

Is it just old people that do this? I don't know of anyone under 50 that does this foward BS.

I can introduce you to a few who are in their late 20's to early 40's....if you really want all this crap in your inbox. And even worse, they'll post it as a bulletin on MySpace...which makes them look even more foolish really.

I would give $100.00 if I could get my cousin to not mass e-mail me with crappy jokes, stupid pictures, urban legends, bogus warnings about how I'm going to get killed or raped at the gas station or the mall, pet stories, and household tips.

I've told him a hundred times that I delete his e-mails, do not open them, do not read them, do not want them, and that some day he's going to send me something important concerning family business, I'm not going to recognize it as such, delete it, and then everyone in the family is going to be mad at me because I'm walking around in the dark.

There is a method used by snopes enthusiasts that has been proven to work from time to time. When you get an email that has a response available on snopes, or straightdope, or any other largely accepted debunking source... reply not only to him with the links, but to everyone else he sent it to.

He'll see to it to omit your name from that list pretty quickly.
