His AR-15 malfunctioned and fired two rounds with one trigger pull on a firing range. It only did this once, and then jammed. Reportedly, from what I saw on another site, the manufacturer also had a recall in effect for this problem. But the government raided his house and convicted him of having a machine gun.

I haven't had the chance to read them, but some of the court documents are here:

If the pc zealots keep pushing this hard, we may have to respond in kind.

I know he's from Wyoming! He happens to be the highest ranking pro-gun guy in the government!
Somebody call him!

...remember we're talking about a state where Jeffery Dhamer chased a nude Thai teenager down the street that escaped his botched acid lobotomy intended to turn the boy into a love zombie - and the police dutifully returned the boy to Dhamer.

So why should we be surprised when they ignore the 2nd Amendment and enthusiastically enforce an unconstitutional law?

It's been hard to find much info on the net about this. Here is a motion from the case.

Apparently, the government may have had evidence that he converted the weapon into a machine gun.

OMG! What in the hell is going on in Wisconsin?!? How did that gentleman ever get convicted? This was a federal case, not a state case, so the state really does not matter.

Of course it was a federal case. Having an automatic weapon in your possession with out a federal tax stamp is a felony. But it had to start somewhere. It didn't start in Washington!

Hence, my question... What the hell is going on in Wisconsin?
And maybe I should have elongated it to read... "And why are neighbors turning in their neighbors?"

There are pellet guns and there are pellet guns.. A BB gun is a pellet gun and it would be hard to kill with it. Put out an eye, yes! But, air rifles are pretty powerful, approaching rifles in muzzle velocity. The pump I have is about 950 fps and is cheap, 2800 fps gets expensive.

A Wisconsin man today surrendered to federal authorities to begin serving a 30-month prison term for having a broken rifle, prompting the Gun Owners of America to issue a warning about the owner's liability should any semi-automatic weapon ever misfire.

"A gun that malfunctions is not a machine gun," Larry Pratt, executive director of GOA, said. "What the [federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] has done in the [David] Olofson case has set a precedent that could make any of the millions of Americans that own semi-automatic firearms suddenly the owner [of] an unregistered machine gun at the moment the gun malfunctions."

Officials with Gun Owners of America told WND they met with Olofson today before he surrendered to federal authorities for his prison term. U.S. District Judge Charles Clevert had imposed the sentence after the gun in question let loose three shots at a firing range.Owner of broken rifle surrenders for 30-month sentence (http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=68590)
