The thunderous applause was still ringing in his ears when the state's new governor, David Paterson, told the Daily News that he and his wife had extramarital affairs.
In a stunning revelation, both Paterson, 53, and his wife, Michelle, 46, acknowledged in a joint interview they each had intimate relationships with others during a rocky period in their marriage several years ago.
In the course of several interviews in the past few days, Paterson said he maintained a relationship for two or three years with "a woman other than my wife," beginning in 1999.
As part of that relationship, Paterson said, he and the other woman sometimes stayed at an upper West Side hotel — the Days Inn at Broadway and W. 94th St.More (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2008/03/17/2008-03-17_gov_paterson_admits_to_sex_with_other_wo.html)
Days Inn? At least it wasn't a Motel 6.
He said members of his Albany legislative staff often used the same hotel when they visit the city. For the same purpose?

Gov. Paterson denies using state or campaign money to pay for liaisons with another woman during a rocky patch in his marriage.
Records show that in September 2001, then-Sen. Paterson's campaign spent $456.46 for two nights at what was then called the Quality Hotel at 215 W. 94th St.
One check was dated Sept. 10 — the day before the 9/11 attacks — and the other Sept. 24. Both are listed as "office" expenses.Sidebar from article in original post.

This is called "innoculation" -- innoculate everybody against the charge by preempting the other guys and charging yourself. Coat yourself in sewage so nothing anybody says about you is worse than what you already said about yourself.
Next thing you know, we'll have some Democrat going on Oprah to announce both his candidacy and his pedophilia.

If they don't, they must pretend to - for the sake of appearance. I suspect many of them are too drunk and tired to actually do all that - so they just fake it.

If he can't keep the vows he made to his wife, why should we believe anything else he says he'll do. There are those people who still vote based upon a person's character because that will ultimately determine how they behave once they are in office.

Don't got kids? You should care if you don't got kids. His flipping off public opinion does not bode well for the public. If he won't honor his wife, the woman who bears his name, he prolly won't honor much else. We don't need more corrupt politicians.

There used to be this show on late night with (I believe) Sid and Marty Krofft's puppets of famous political figures. They'd be in a bar talking. In one conversation, a Ted Kennedy puppet asks a Jimmy Carter puppet if he's ever cheated on his wife, etc. When the Carter puppet answers no to all of Ted's questions, the Ted puppet says to him, "And you call yourself a Democrat?"

Whatever. I could really and trully care less about politicians sex lives. Either they are effective leaders or they are not. Thier private lives are just that, private and as long as they manage to do their jobs that's what I'm going to judge them on. If everybody held such strict standards for their leaders on high moral behavior I doubt Winston Churchill would ever have seen the inside of Parliment, much less 10 Downing.

That's probably IMO one of the worst ways to vote on someone is their supposed 'character'. Often those who were regarded to have the 'highest' character have been some of the worst leaders and those with a little dirt on their hands the best.

Well Magg-T, once again you attribute whatever you want to think about my positions instead of what I actually say. How surprising.
I don't care if a Republican or a Dem has an affair. As long as they don't break any laws they could have had an orgy with midgets for all i care. I think Spitzer should definatly have resigned because he violated the Mann Act, at the very least, and hence became a criminal. Craig left the Senate, rightly so, because he pleaded guilty to a crime, but if he just had gay sex legally with a man I wouldn't have supported his resignation.

I would agree except when I know somebody's not keeping his marriage vows. Then it's a public issue, because it reflects on his character; and I don't want a shady character in public office.
People who want to play those kinds of games need to stay out of public office. We need solid people as public servants, not sellers to the highest bidder or chasers after the cutest skirt.

Don't get me wrong; I don't really care about a politician's private life. It's between that person & the spouse involved, so the focus should be on the issues & not who's been doin' who. I pointed this out in a different thread about an infidelity rumor involving Bush.
It just seemed to me that there was a different standard being applied to Paterson, since he's of a different political persuasion.

"In 1979 at a military reception in Honolulu, McCain met Cindy Hensley, an attractive 25-year-old woman from a very wealthy politically-connected Arizona family. Cindy's father, Jim, founded the Hensley and Company, the nation's third-largest Anheuser-Busch distributor.
McCain described their first meeting, "She was lovely, intelligent and charming, 17 years my junior but poised and confident. I monopolized her attention the entire time, taking care to prevent anyone else from intruding on our conversation. When it came time to leave the party, I persuaded her to join me for drinks at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. By the evening's end, I was in love."
While still married to Carol, McCain began an adulterous relationship with Cindy. He married Cindy in May 1980 -- just a month after dumping Carol and securing a divorce. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii."

Ok, Mutt. Let me ask you this, then. Is a D behind a politician's/candidate for president's name enough convince you that it is ok for that person to preach morality at you, while he/she cavalierly disregards that same morality?
I mean, history is full of examples of people who were highly esteemed in public, and yet led sexually depraved lives - some to the point of murder - in "private."
Does that really not bother you because you believe it's "private"?
And please, don't pooh-pooh it as improbable. Or worse, come back with the tiresome "Well Republicans do it, too!" Try to come back with a less lame and more mature argument, do yourself a favor.

Quite simply i don't want anybody preaching morality at me especially politicians; it's not their job. Public policy is their job and they would do well to stick to it.
I mean, history is full of examples of people who were highly esteemed in public, and yet led sexually depraved lives - some to the point of murder - in "private."
