A Michigan congressman wants to put a 50-cent tax on every gallon of gasoline to try to cut back on Americans' consumption.

Polls show that a majority of Americans support policies that would reduce greenhouse gases. But when it comes to paying for it, it's a different story.

Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., wants to help cut consumption with a gas tax but some don't agree with the idea, according to a new poll by the National Center for Public Policy Research.

Michigan should lead the way, having it as a state tax, with a picture of Dingle on the pump pricing, as a background to the $.50 cent increase.

Michigan. The State with automobile manufacturing recession. Michigan.... land of the unemployed Union automobile worker.

Great idea, Ding Dong. Go ahead and further cripple and kill your state's major industry, by raising gasoline taxes. Maybe you don't realize foreign competitor auto manufacturers such as Toyota are ALREADY making fuel efficient small cars. Anybody like to take a guess who's going to get the automobile sales in the future, with this higher gas tax?

This guy is a real Brainiac.

You may not know the half of it. Dingell is a died-in-the-wool Commie.

Actually that's quite true. The only thing a "politician" has proved they can do is..... get elected. That doesn't mean they know squat about anything they vote on, or interfere with.

A Michigan congressman wants to put a 50-cent tax on every gallon of gasoline to try to cut back on Americans' consumption. Is this the same John Dingell?

... House Democratic leaders, hoping to pass an “energy independence” bill this month, have had to delay taking the measure to the floor for weeks. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her allies want a hefty increase in fuel-economy requirements for cars, light trucks and S.U.V.’s, but they are finding that it is not easy to maneuver around Mr. Dingell, who wants a smaller increase that would be less painful for Detroit automakers.

The power struggle pits a towering committee chairman, long accustomed to running his own show, against the first female House speaker, who has her own ambitious agenda.

When Ms. Pelosi, of California, created a new committee on energy independence and global warming in January, Mr. Dingell attacked it as a potential encroachment on his turf. Though she assured him the new panel would have no legislative authority, he remarked that it would be an “embarassment” and “as useful as feathers on a fish.”Veteran House Democrat Guards Turf on Energy (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/21/washington/21dingell.html)
