Apple released a massive security update on Tuesday that patched at least 80 vulnerabilities in its Tiger and Leopard operating systems, many of which were critical.

The massive patch batch amounts to a download of more than 105MB, and that doesn't include a separate 25MB file that installs version 3.1 of Apple's Safari browser. Mac users who haven't already been prompted to install the updates should apply them manually by opening the OS X system preferences and choosing Software Update.Apple unleashes monster patch batch on Mac faithful (http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2008/03/19/monster_apple_patch_batch/)

Welcome to the real world, guys and gals.

Apple's are for weeabos and liberals. Neil Peart should get that weeabos part.

I was unaware Rush Limbaugh, an avid Mac user, is a weeabo and liberal. Thanks for enlightening me as to how far to the fringe some members of this forum are.

Macs are good boxes for Photoshop, genetic analysis programs, etc. However, for average folks, they're severe overkill. Spending a couple of kilobucks for a machine for email and web surfing is ludicrous.

And here's the ultimate insult to Jobs.

Can Apple, Intel and Microsoft coexist peacefully? In this article we are going to talk about our experience with Apple MacBook Pro mobile system on Santa Rosa platform with a very usual operating system for this type of platform: Microsoft Windows Vista. Besides, we will also compare the performance of this solution against that of a classical Wintel system - ASUS Lamborghini VX2S.Madman Diaries: Apple MacBook Pro and Microsoft Windows Vista (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mobile/display/apple-macbook-pro.html)

When Apple decided to dump the Motorola proprietary CPUs in favor of Intel X86-architecture chips, it was inevitable that Windows would be loaded on Macs. Take that, Steve!

I am a Mac user. Rush is a Mac user. I was admonished this is a tech forum not a debate forum so I will leave the political conclusions to the readers. I will remain loyal to Apple, Mac OS X and Linux Fedora PPC.

I got one because they're safer from viruses, and they are more reliable. Far too often when i was younger our PC would have to be replaced every so often or would have to be shipped off to get fixed.

I hear that new 'worlds thinnest laptop' they have is lacking some major features, like no network jack, no optical drive, only one USB port, etc. Kinda easy to make something thin if you eliminate most of the functions.

It doesn't have a place to put in a CD! Well is it just me? Or is that stupid.

I got one because they're safer from viruses ...That's an illusion fostered by the fact that due to the niche market that they represent, they are not an attractive target for the a'holes who write malware. They crave instant, major results. If they were to launch a Mac virus, who would know about it?

"The satellite is at present over... Kansas. Well, if we destroy Kansas the world may not hear about it for years."
-- Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Diasmonds Are Forever

... and they are more reliable. For a couple of thousand bucks for off-the-shelf hardware assembled in a box with an Apple logo, they farking well SHOULD be reliable. IAC, this Wintel box was built in Sept. of 2002. Aside from replacing a couple of cooling fans, upgrading the hard drives, and occasionally blowing out accumulated duist, I've done nothing to it. That's reliability. One of these days I'll upgrade the mobo and CPU, but as yet I've found no compelling reasoin for it. It does what I want, and that's the only worthwhile consideration.

Far too often when i was younger our PC would have to be replaced every so often or would have to be shipped off to get fixed. The cheap Wal-Mart-type boxes are not designed for longevity. They're essentially throwaways. I build my own. And for the cost of a PowerMac (or whatever Jobs is calling them today), I could build an ass-kicking Wintel machine.

The MacBook Air is an expensive, "Gee whiz!" toy like the iPhone. It's a "gotta have it" gimmick with no practical use, the only selling point being that it is "ultrathin, ultraportable, and ultra unlike anything else" (Mac's spin on it (http://www.apple.com/macbookair/)). It bloody well isn't worth $1800, but Mac addicts will buy it just because.

Re a network jack, from the above-linked page ...

Wireless

Built for the wireless world.

MacBook Air is designed and engineered to take full advantage of the wireless world. A world in which 802.11n Wi-Fi is now so fast and so available, people are truly living untethered — buying and renting movies online, downloading software, and sharing and storing files on the web.Freely translated, if you're not near a WiFi hot-spot or a WAP, you don't connect.

Macbook Air hacked in less than 2 minutes

By S.E. Kramer

The PWN 2 OWN hacking contest is on right now at CanSecWest, a huge security conference in Vancouver, and yesterday afternoon Charlie Miller won $10,000 there for hacking a new Macbook Air in 2 minutes.

Miller is known as the first programmer to hack the iPhone. Yesterday he was able to hack a Macbook Air by directing contest officials to a website that allowed him to seize control of the computer...http://dvice.com/archives/2008/03/macbook_air_hac.php
