Small soldier gets his wish (http://www.kdhnews.com/news/story.aspx?s=24001)

FORT HOOD – Five-year-old Gaven Cox was given one wish to do anything he wanted.

< snip , snip >

"He told us he wanted to be an Army soldier," said Melissa Heminger, Gaven's mom. "I was a little bit surprised that he asked for McDonald's, but in reality, he wanted to be a soldier since he was 3."

Gaven, who is diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, was granted one wish by the Make-A-Wish-Foundation.

Heminger said Gaven's stepfather was a former soldier and his Army medals fascinated Gaven.

While the Army has age restrictions on how old a person must be to enlist, it decided to make an exception.

I too am glad they made an exception. Such a simple thing for the Army to do. A singular honor, possibly never to be repeated.

Kudos to the Army for having a heart.

I can't say who I'm more proud of right now..

That lil' guy's courage and love for his country, or the Soldiers who let him share his dream within their ranks.

Either way, I'm grateful to the US Army and deeply humbled by their compassion and spirit.

THIS America is what we fight for.

However, there is an 85 percent success rate of curing the disease in children, according to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Web site.

Those are good odds, but it's still horrible a child is afflicted by something like this. A positive attitude is part of fighting cancer. This youngster's visit with the Army can only help.

Agreed. I think that this kid should be in congress. At least he appreciates the military at such bad times like that.
