Does anyone here listen to Christian music? Specifically Christian rock?

Here's my problem. I love rock n roll. I grew up on it. I can't get enough of the raw guitars and heavy drums, the screeching frontmen backed up with thick base lines, etc.. But lately I've wanted to delve into Christian rock, not pop music mind you, though that's okay, but I want the real thing. I know it's out there, I know it exists, but where? Does anyone have any suggestions to some Christian rock bands? The closest I've come to finding it so far has been the likes of Petra, DC Talk, (although they are sort of popish and they're not together anymore anyway), Newsboys, and Audio Adrenaline. Does anybody have any other names I could try for something a little heavier in the tunes department? I'd REALLY appreciate it. http://freeconservatives.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I'll check with my cousins and see what they say. Might take a few days before I get an answer, though...

Okay, I've received responses from 2 of the 3 cousins I emailed. Here are their responses.

"D" emailed:

For a guy who had the KISS song "Beth" at his wedding, Petra isn't a bad option for those not so fresh feeling days! (I'm a lover not a fighter!) Unfortunately, I have a thing for heavy metal ballads and Petra has that sound. I disagree with my colleague regarding Petra. As But-Wheat would say.."Day are two tumms up Oh-Tay wiff me!" Not a screaming guitar group, however. They has aspirations of it originally, but were ahead of the times when they started.

Truth be told...grandma listens to Michael W. Smith...

"Grandma" in both of these responses, btw, is their mom who is 60+ years old.

"B" wrote a bit more and went into depth (he's the music man of the family):

Newsboys - #1 band out there right now.(most popular, not necessarily the
best)- "Thrive" is their best to date or "Shine, the Hits" for a
best of compilation.

Audio Adreneline - Get the "Hit Parade" CD it is great.

Petra - WHIMPS with a whiny lead singer. Sorry for that if anyone is a Petra
fan. Save your money, grandma listens to Petra. They are the Bill Gather of
rock, been around to long and now they are a "non-factor." (to quote garage
logic)

Depending on what you want here are some names:
1) Third Day - Hard rock. They are raw but have mellowed on their later stuff.
I love them.
2) Skillet - Kind of grunge meets punk. Any band with a chick drummer is OK
in my book.
3) Switchfoot - Medium-Hard but very melodic.
4) Cadet - Don't have any of their stuff on CD but have heard good things from
friends about them. Also, seen their videos on TVU. Can't remember the
secular band they are like.
5) Paul Coleman Trio - Melodic Rock. I know, the name alone invokes "Puff the
Magic Dragon" but they are good rock. Maybe not hard enough for what you are
looking for. Next to Mitch McVicker(folk-rock, not what you are looking for)
these guys were my favorite "new find" for me at Sonshine this year.
6) 12 Stones - Butt kickin rock.

These are six I like off the top of my head.
They do have the heavy, heavy metal stuff but I don't necessarily listen to
them. There are also some "Christian Death Metal" bands if that is what you
are looking for. Let me know what music and I will find some Christian bands
that are similar.
If I can think of others I will let you know.

Hope this helps you out...If you are looking for that "Christian Death Metal" (?speed metal?), just say so and I'll email him again.

checking, I like Avalon myself but that's too soft for what you are talking about.

Actually I love Avalon, I just bought their greatest hits. And right now the Newsboys seem to be the best band out there. And I've heard of Skillet, but I've never heard any of their songs, but now I might try it.
I'm not really into death/speed metal of any kind... Thank you all so much! I'm gonna look into that list TW, I appreciate it! http://freeconservatives.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon16.gif

OK, n, I contacted my nephew in Oregon who is into this sort of music and he responds as follows:

[ QUOTE ]
Some of these bands are my favorite, while others I've only really read about. Most of these bands are still together, although a couple are not.

Highly Recommended: Stavesacre, POD, Plankeye (their first 3 albums), Project 86, Grammatrain

Other Possibilities: Further Seems Forever, Bleach, Dogwood, Kutlass, Blackball

A quick search on Amazon should get a list of albums, album reviews, probably song samples, and other information. Band homepages are easy to find through Google.

I hope you find something in here you like!
