If Carter pulls this crap while a Republican is president, at least there is some level of plausible deniability on the part of the administration when he makes a fool of himself. He can't be seen as an "official" or even "unofficial" representative of the United States. With a Democrat in the White House, however, that deniability is lost.

I may sound Machiavellian here, but why should the U.S. care about "our image" in the world? The sheeple at DU are always quick to trot out surveys that show "our image" has been all but irretrievably damaged by Bush and Cheney since 2001. Well, guess what?
