So This is the feeling one gets when one sees traffic slowing down on the road ahead and the myriad flashing red and blue lights..

This is the experience as one edges closer and closer to 'the scene'.

Swear it to yourself.. "I will not be like Every other driver and glance over at the horrific bloodsplattered wreck at the focal point of this. I will not slow my car and stare, slack-jawed like a mesmerized bovine at the body parts strewn along the shoulder and the overturned semi, its tractor impaled halfway through the twisted school bus, looking for all the world like an overgrown abstract art representation of a steel t-rex mating with an aluminum stegosaurus.."

And all of these other sick fools who are succumbing to the tragedy..

"No, I am NOT like them. I am mature. I am respectful. There is nothing I can do anyway, professionals are handling the situation."

The cars crawl slowly forwards, and like a robotic assembly line, every head inevitably swivels to face the crash.

Who are these strange and curious people, my fellow trafficers? How can they be so weak minded and meddlesome that they would take some sort of morbid pleasure in witnessing the pain of others? Am I the Only one who understands that sometimes Not knowing, that Not seeing, can lead to greater peace than sating idle and intrusive curiousity?

Again the cars lurch forward. There, there is another excellent reason. I have appointments to keep. I have things to do. I do not have time to waste on this. Don't these people have anywhere else to go??

Forward once again..

And then it's my turn. My car approaches the scene.

And before I realize it my head has turned, of its own volition..

And I'm lost in the horror, the image of the nightmare seared into my memory for all time.
