At least two dozen schools, including Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, Oberlin College, Clark University and the California Institute of Technology, allow some or all students to share a room with anyone they choose — including someone of the opposite sex. This spring, as students sign up for next year's room, more schools are following suit, including Stanford University.

As shocking as it sounds to some parents, some students and schools say it's not about sex.

Instead, they say the demand is mostly from heterosexual students who want to live with close friends who happen to be of the opposite sex. Some gay students who feel more comfortable rooming with someone of the opposite sex are also taking advantage of the option.

"It ultimately comes down to finding someone that you feel is compatible with you," said Jeffrey Chang, a junior at Clark in Worcester, Mass., who co-founded the National Student Genderblind Campaign, a group that is pushing for gender-neutral housing. "Students aren't doing this to make a point. They're not doing this to upset their parents. It's really for practical reasons."

Beyond the obvious moral issues, has anyone thought about the potential personal safety implications here?

There's really no need for this. It is pure political correctness.

yea, whaaatevvver. We're talking about 19-22 year olds here and unless humans have changed recently I can pretty much guarantee that it is about sex.

There's also a push for guy/girl restrooms... not sure I could get a stream going knowing a woman might come through the door.

Is it just me or is the country getting wackier by the day.

While the kids are the students, in almost every case, the parents control the purse strings.

They have the power to say "enough." Whether or not they choose to exercise that power is the issue.

They won't, so they will get just what they deserve.

My first roommate in college was all flame, no candle. Didn't bother me much, even when he looked at my dong when I got out of the shower. I'd just taunt him like a kid at a candy store with zero funds. 'You digging that shit?' Then I'd flex my biceps and kiss 'em and say, 'too bad you ain't getting none o' this.' Then I'd turn around, bend over and fart.

And in the dorm room, if he needed a paper weight for his homework I'd plop my sac down on the upper right hand corner and leave a little wet mark. I'm sure he sniffed the hell out of that when I left for class. Wasn't no homophobe none neither. I was flattered. He had an appreciation for my junk, even if he couldn't partake, that I don't even think my girlfriend(at the time) did.
