BIG PINE KEY, Fla. -- An alligator in the Florida Keys has died after eating a toy turtle the size of a cookie cutter...

A necropsy showed the plastic toy stuck between the alligator's stomach and intestines, blocking his ability to digest food...

...Anne Morkill called the alligator's death "needless and due to someone's carelessness."...http://www.local6.com/news/16131896/detail.html

Time to ban toy turtles.

Or make a new handbag and some shoes.

You know, if the gators would stay our of people's backyards, maybe they wouldn't be eating toy turtles. To blame someone for being careless when I know several people from Florida who have woke up to Gators in their pools...that's silly.

LDG, unfortunately though, there are many people down here (not natives, people who move here) who feed the gators. That's a big no-no, and causes lots of them critters to go wandering into people's yards, houses, garages, swimming pools, etc.

This one wasn't in someone's back yard, so it was someone being careless. I have no love for alligators, but being starved to death is a really cruel way to go.

But how do you know where he picked it up. He lived and was found in the quarry, at least that's how I read it, but who knows where he went and got ahold of the toy.

And I know Homes, it's sad that people are so stupid that they forget those "cute" little babies grow up to be much bigger and meaner!

If the thing was as small as a cookie cutter it could have blown out of someones yard with the wind. I can't see how this would be anything more than an accident since they have no idea where it came from it's hard to tell. A child could have dropped it from a stroller without a parent knowing. The list of innocent possibilities are endless. And it sounds like he was partial to eating toy's since they found a toy soldier too.

There are no yards around for it to blow from. The National Key Deer Refuge encompasses the entire island.

My mistake. Blue Hole is on Big Pine Key, not No Name Key. Big Pine is not entirely comprised of the park like No Name, but there are no homes near Blue Hole. A toy soldier would not have blown there either. And a child dropping something from a stroller is what I meant by carelessness.
