The latest battle in the war on illegal immigration isn't over the smuggling of undocumented workers, it's over the trash they leave behind.

Government officials and border activists say the garbage dumped in the desert by illegal immigrants and their smugglers is staggering.

And the cleanup is costing taxpayers millions.


In 2006 alone, more than 1.18 million pounds of trash was collected along southern Arizona border, many in the meeting spots where immigrants rest, change clothes and wait to hitch a ride further north with a smuggler.

Arizonia officials have spent approximately $4.4 million over five years to clean up the mess, that continues to build with each crossing. Nearly $1 million was spent for 2007 from a base BLM appropriation.:unsmile:

A lot of that "trash" looks like clothing, backpacks, etc. If they can afford to unload that many "essentials" on the way up from Mexico, just how bad off are they back home?

Coincidently, one can see the very same thing at a Wal Mart or Dollar Store here on the border. That's what the inside of these stores look like after a day of shopping with hundreds of unsupervised kids allowed to run around the store like its a daycare.

My old office was directly across from the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. Adjacent to the Center is a large tract of grassy land reserved for outdoor events. There is a Mexican Festival --something about Delores --I never did understand what it was about or for, but it takes place on that grassy tract of land for three or four days every year.

When the "Mex Festival" is over, you can not believe the amount and nature of the trash that is left behind. Everything from beer and whiskey bottles, used Pampers, used condoms, vomit, clothing, etc. It is the nastiest mess that you have ever witnessed.

By contrast, the Cowboy Symposium and International Horseshoeing Competition [now held in Sweetwater, I think because they needed more space] comes every Labor Day Weekend. There is live music, Chuck Wagon Cooking Competition, Chili Cookoff, lots of outdoor booths with everything from saddles and tack, to hot sauce and snow cones, etc.

When the Cowboys leave the area, there is not so much as a cigarette butt left on the premises.

You would never know that the Cowboys had been there.

Same goes for the Ginners. When the Ginners Convention leaves town with their equipment, booths and displays, the place is pristine.

OH ho ho ho ho...let me tell you about my school bus.
For the past couple years (since I moved to texas) we have had the crappiest bus in the whole school. (Windows all broken, holes in floor, trash everywhere, rips in seats, no AC or heater and winters are very cold and summers very hot, I could go on and on). Well we finally got a new bus a couple weeks ago. And I walked in a couple days ago (mind you I ride the bus with all the kids from the dairy i.e. Mexicans) and ill be damned if there wasnt sunflower seeds and trash all over the floor and one of the windows busted out already. I just could not contain myself. I went off saying, "You guys dont appreciate a damn thing and you ruin it for the rest of us! Why do you think it took so long to get this bus in the first place!" GAH! It pisses me off sooooo bad.

I don't know about it being the "latest" battle. I read about this years ago. Animals were getting sick and dying from things they ate in their discarded rubbish. It also said the river was full of bacteria as a result of being a toilet for hundreds of thousands of illegals.

The environmentalists and animal rights activists are strangely silent however.

Oh, trust me, I get in my deal of scuffs with these people. I cant tell you how many fights Ive been in with girls AS WELL AS guys. Ive never really lost, but come close a couple times.
