Staubach turns down SecNav offer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By David Brown
Navy Times staff writer
Navy football star Roger Staubach, considered for weeks to be in the running to become the new secretary of the Navy, has taken a pass on the opportunity, a spokeswoman said.
“He just has a lot going on in his life, and his company is growing,” Michelle Davis, a spokeswoman for Staubach, in Dallas said Feb. 22. “He told me yesterday that he has removed himself from the list, and apparently he made the decision last week.”
Staubach’s decision leaves the field more open for former Bush administration official Chase Untermeyer, the other name that has been floated to replace popular Navy Secretary Richard Danzig, who left office Jan. 20.
Staubach, a 1965 Naval Academy graduate, won the Heisman Trophy while playing for the school and joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1969 after finishing his tour in the Navy.
While playing for the Cowboys in 1970, he started a second career in real estate. Now, Staubach is chairman and CEO of the Dallas-based Staubach Co., a multi-national real estate company.
Davis said Staubach had a “serious” conversation with a Bush administration official the week of Feb. 11. It was apparently during this discussion that Staubach removed his name from consideration.
“It was a very tough decision for him,” Davis said. “He has a huge love for the Navy, he’s very patriotic, and he wants to do what’s right for the country. But the timing is just not right for him, and I think he truly struggled with the decision.”
Former Navy undersecretary Robert Pirie is acting as secretary of the Navy until an official nominee is announced.

tacitus, why not? He's been a success at everything he has tried. Active in Republican politics, he has often turned down chances to run for office or take an appointed post, so this latest refusal is no surprise. Don't mistake this man, whose quiet demeanor and calm attitude display the very qualities we used to value in this country, for just another jock. He's been a huge success in business and is much more of a maker and shaker in national and international events than appears on the surface. I remember when I was in high school, during the early 70s when Staubach had just started his Cowboy career, and the Staubachs were just another moderately successful upper middle class family, living in Richardson. This guy has made tremendous achievements. He just doesn't toot his own horn and he never engages in a showy, shallow lifestyle.
