Found it on a military discussion thread over on myspace.
I guess they are trying a new tactic. Blending in with the ship.

:question:Yeah because if anyone sees a huge United States Navy vessel they are going to assume we are just letting them float around out there with no one on board if they have those uniforms on.

The "no-shine" boot is optional??? How much you wanna bet it gets almost 100% usage?

It'll be interesting to see what a navy-camo version of this (http://www.yardwear.net/blog/PermaLink,guid,ec76ea1b-46bc-4847-9bf4-da077277894a.aspx) looks like:

Never mind that. Try to find some sailors for a working party now. They'll just blend in with the ship's environment and Petty Officers won't be able to see them.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Maybe the Navy guys felt left out since all the other branches updated their uniforms lately? I find the blue kinda funny...if they wanted to blend in w/the ship shouldn't it be more grey?

Some years back, blue bell-bottomed dungarees with light blue cotton shirts and white "Dixie cup" head gear made sailors stand out, and the bell-bottoms were there for a reason. If there were suddenly an abandon ship order, sailors were trained to first put on their heavy boondockers above anything else. The reason being, if you managed to get your ship blown to bits close to some island, once you got to walking distance of it your bare feet would be shredded by the coral reef. The bell-bottoms allowed one to slip the pants right over the boondockers. The shirt blended in with the ship at long distances, and all the articles of clothing, including the hat, a sailor learned to use as flotation devices. One soon got tired of treading water after a few hours. The lifeboats were never meant to support more than about 40 percent of the crew. Someone figured that if 60 percent of the crew were already dead, the remaining crew might survive on the lifeboats, capacity 30 to 40 sailors each. We were told in boot camp to always grab a ball peen hammer for a survival tool. You wanted to make sure you got a seat on one of the boats. Just kidding.
I retired before I could discover why some clown decided to change the sailors into some strange workers dressed in dark blue coveralls instead.

I had an Uncle who was on the Ruben James when it sank. He went back to get another shirt and a package of cigarettes before he abandoned ship. Of course when he got in the water the cigarettes fell apart. :shake:

It's very risky carrying a knife on a lifeboat, so lit cigarettes would really be a morale booster, especially with sharks swimming around the boat!

Except ours was to be near the fire ax so you could be one of the first to bail out if the plane was going down. Our station was right next to the firefighter panel.

Uh, so we could not have to get up so early to be at work on time? I can be dressed in Coveralls in a matter of seconds.
-No shirt buttons
-No gigline
-No ironing
-No problem
I generally like the new NWU, I only hope we get to keep the coveralls.
