The picture was taken in 1918. It is thousands of men preparing for war in a training camp at Camp Dodge in Iowa. This is a definitely a true gift from some of our grandfathers. Enjoy!

Imagine how long t hese 18,000 men had to stand in that one spot to set it up correctly. Don’t you just love the detail by the change of hats to no hats, some with heads bent down, some with faces shining, and slightly different colors of uniforms etc? This took an enormous amount of planning, patience, and positioning and a determination to send their message to us, yes even to the world. It speaks loud and clear.
God Bless America.

Even computer-assisted, this would be an extraordinary task today. And they managed WITHOUT! Color me impressed.

That is totally awesome!! Not only were they able to coordinate it but photography being what it was back then it's no telling how long they had to stand there to get the best pose. A truly patriotic generation!

Awesome. Unbelievable. I luvvit.
But that ain't no 18,000 men.
Count the widest row at the bottom. It's 17 men wide. To make a box 17 men wide with 17,000 men (not even 18,000), the whole thing would have to be a thousand men tall. This statue's not only not a box, which would use more men than the picture does; but it's nowhere close to a thousand people tall. I can count 40 men tall starting from the base up to the statue's lower right arm, where it's raised. I can't see well enough to count beyond there, but even if it's another 40 men to the top of the lantern, that's still only 80. Even if it were a hundred tall, and in the shape of a box 17 men wide, that would only be 1700.
Nowhere even close to 18,000 people making that statue. I think they estimated 1800 and somebody has misstated it.
But it's still mighty nifty. I've cooperated in a few similar things and you wouldn't believe how hard it is to get people to stand still. Somebody's always gotta take a piss. Somebody's feeling faint. Somebody doesn't like the man next to him. Somebody's gotta fart. On and on and on.

It's a shame that such a symbol of liberty has been turned into a symbol of national suicide.
