It's not easy to break bad driving habits, but if you don't, the money you lose on gas could wind up breaking your bank.

<!-- source --> NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- With all the worry over fuel prices, you'd think drivers would do whatever they can not to waste gas. But look around and you'll see lots of them tooling around as if they owned their own tanker fleet. One of them might be you.

Here are six ways drivers typically waste gas on every trip:

1. Racing away from green lights

When the light turns green, you don't have to take off as quickly as possible. That pedal under your right foot is called the "gas pedal" for a good reason. The more you press down on it, the more gas you're pumping into the engine.

Press lightly on the gas pedal, and you'll still accelerate, and you'll still get where you're going. You might be surprised at how little pressure it takes to get your car up to speed in a reasonable time.

2. Racing up to red lights

When you're driving down the street, and you see a light red light or stop sign up ahead, you should lay off the gas sooner rather than later.

There's no point in keeping your foot on the gas until just before you reach the intersection. Let off the pedal sooner and give your engine a rest as you coast to the stop while braking gently. As an added benefit, your brake pads will last longer, too.

By themselves, these first two tips can improve your fuel economy around town by as much as 35 percent, according to tests conducted by automotive information Web site Edmunds.com.

So, the whole article could be summed by in one sentence: "Don't drive like a jerk!" Which means that if all of California's drivers stopped driving like jerks, we might single handedly defeat global warming. God knows we got enough asshole drivers as it is...

If one good thing comes out of higher gas prices, it's that Americans will finally get off their butts and walk to the store for a change, or ride their bikes. Most Americans live within walking distance to a store, and if you aren't heading there for a regular grocery shopping trip, why not hop on a bike?

Many people, but especially "driving enthusiasts," like to do the first two things mentioned because they're "fun."

The more you can drive without your foot on either the gas or brake pedal, the more money you can save. This simple concept is lost on most drivers, or so it seems.

In tests by Consumer Reports, driving at 75 miles per hour instead of 65 miles per hour reduced fuel economy by between 3 and 5 miles per gallon, depending on the vehicle.

I think that's a bunch of hooey...with my minivan driving 5mph slower gains me about 1 mpg. Maybe sometime I'll try the 75/65 difference and see what happens. I know this, at 75 my minivan gets 20-21mpg, but if I drove 37.5, I wouldn't get twice the mileage.

Let's see, following these tips might save me $200/yr...naaa, not worth the effort.

BTW, personally, I think the oil problem will be the trigger for the events in Revelation to happen! My .02!

Some liberal twit wrote a letter to the ed about he/she had read where algae could be used to make biodiesel and this is something we need to work on.

I wonder if he/she has any idea how much algae would be needed to make a small dent in the diesel consumption? :rotflmbo::rotflmbo:

Same with making diesel from used deep frying oils....it works for a few folks who want to mess with it, but how much oil is used to fry fries compared to diesel used? Also, if you burn 100 gal of diesel/wk, you have to gather 100 gal of used frying oil each week. Now if I owned a restaurant, I'd have me a setup and make my own diesel and have diesel vehicles.

Ethanol policy threatens to starve the world (http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/showthread.php?t=56514&highlight=biodiesel+algae)

It has its place, and it should be used, but it's a supplement, not a replacement, for petrofuels.

Once again, time is money. Driving slower and taking longer to get where you are going has a cost often equal or greater. Now for the kicker, Minneapolis just enacted a city ordinance limiting vehicles to 3 minutes of idling time when not in traffic to save the planet. My sister will cry about that during winter up there.

Sounds great. More unenforceable laws that the bureaucrats love to pass to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy.

Please. Are they going to hire idle police now? I don't think so. Idle those cars up and keep warm, the planet won't mind.

What's Minneapolis going to do about police cars sitting and idling while the officer is either (a) laying low, looking for speeders; (b) laying low, looking for people who leave their engines idling for 3 minutes and 1 second; or (c) having a doughnut and a cup of coffee?

The benefit as I understand it is not linear--that is, going from 55 to 45 won't do much for you, but 75 to 65 can make a real difference.

6 Ways You're Wasting Gas

6 ways you're wasting time pretending to be doing something worthwhile. If gas gets too expensive, we don't need no steenkeeng govt to tell us; we just won't buy as much gas. That's the way the market works, you freakin' shiite Moslems, always looking for new ways to boss people around, cut their heads off or blow them up.

No, wait, that's the Sunnis
