Kent State University's golden eagle mascot doesn't fly with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the organization says.
PETA issued an action alert that asks the public to urge KSU officials to stop showcasing the live eagle at university events.
"This is totally unnatural for the bird," PETA spokesman Daniel Hauff said Thursday. "Forcing a wild animal into a bright gymnasium filled with people is terrifying for the animal. They shouldn't be shuffled around like sports equipment."
He said PETA prefers that schools and colleges use costumed humans as mascots....http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2008/06/08/ohno_eagle_ABJ_0605.ART_ART_06-08-08_A2_T3AEDLR.html?sid=101

Animal rights folks have no idea what's natural for an animal or not. I had an "activist" in my shop protesting that I was pulling the hair out of a bichon's ears and the dog was yelling about it. I tried to tell this woman that it had to be done. Even veterinatians say that it's the groomer's job to remove the hair from growing in the ear canal.
She said "That's nonsense. What do they do in the wild, when there isn't anyone to take the hair out." Maybe she was put off by my surprised look 'There aren't any wild Bichons." She haughitily replied as if I simply didn't know any better. "Where do you think that domestic Bichon's come from. Same place as poodles. Trapped by hunters."
Right now, today, the thought of puffy headed Bichon Frises rampaging through a forest makes me laugh. I can't help it. It's enough to brighten my day. I can just see a pack of toy poodles, top knots bobbing, sniffing around in search of new hair ribbons.

I'm wondering why PETA hasn't tried this against FSU for the use of Renegade (the horse Chief Osceola, our mascot, rides). Probably because we ALREADY defeated the NCAA when they tried to ban Chief Osceola, :smirk:
NCAA allowing Florida State to use its Seminole mascot (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2005-08-23-fsu-mascot-approved_x.htm)
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State's fierce defense of its Seminoles nickname and mascot proved successful Tuesday.

The NCAA granted a waiver in the first challenge to a new policy, removing FSU from a list of colleges whose sports teams, it said, use "hostile or abusive" Native American names and imagery.

Officially, Kent State is known as the Golden Flashes. That being the case, their mascot should look something like this, no?
