Column: McCain’s mythology might be his toughest foe
Raymond Billy
In his bid to become the 44th president of the United States, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will face a difficult opponent in his own political mythology.
Many people — until recently, myself included — believe McCain is not a “true conservative.” But, while doing research for an earlier column I planned to write, I found that McCain’s voting record is solidly and unapologetically conservative.
McCain has been consistently anti-abortion throughout his congressional career, which is reflected by his votes on every major piece of legislation dealing with the matter. He has stood against measures designed to give homosexual couples parity with heterosexuals. He has also been a strong supporter of tax cuts and, of course, his Military record in unparalleled. These are just a few examples of McCain’s staunch conservatism.
However, perception is reality and each individual’s reality will shape his or her level of enthusiasm to cast a ballot in favor of the senator. McCain will have an uphill climb in his attempt to turn out the Republican Party’s conservative base.
