Frontline ... Black Hawk pilots Tara, left,
and Khirsten</center>

From ANTONELLA LAZZERI in Bagram, Afghanistan

US girl fliers have won the respect of Britain’s super-tough Marines in Afghanistan.

The girls, all in their 20s, have been ferrying Our Boys into dangerous frontline positions in their Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters.

And they have amazed the men with their cool, professional skill.

The four — dubbed the Black Hawk Babes by the Brits — have come under intense enemy fire during arduous missions.

And they have achieved incredible feats like hovering over narrow mountain ridges with just two wheels on the ground as troops disembark.

Speaking at Bagram air base, Black Hawk pilot Khirsten Schwenn, 24, said: “Whenever we fly your guys they ask for our autographs or want our photos.

“They treat us like celebrities — it’s been really funny but neat. They are great guys and very polite, but they always seem a little shocked to see us.”

First Lieutenant Khirsten played a key role in Operation Eagle last week, when commandos were dropped off to carry out surprise checks on vehicles near the Pakistan border.

The New Yorker said: “When we were planning the mission I was with one of my guys and the British commander kept talking to him. Finally my guy had to say ‘Excuse me sir, but she is in charge here’. Your guy looked really shocked.”

Tara Sykes-Hill, 27, flew one of the £6million choppers — made famous in the film Black Hawk Down — during Operation Eagle.

Call me a chauvanous pig, but I'm not ready to accept women in combat.

Just what the hell do we think we're doing?

I am with you Ted, and I don't think I can be a "chauvanous pig" so I don't think you are either!

What happened to that thread on Bush reversing the policy on women. I can't find it with the search feature in any forum. Did someone delete it? My hubby wanted to see it!

When I was stationed in Egypt as part of the MFO (Multinational Force and observers) we got to see the Israeli Infantry. Now being an Infantry soldier as well, It did my heart a lot of good to see nice looking females carrying machine guns around. Some of our Infantry units already have females as part of the Battalion/Brigade command staff.

Well, I think they are kinda cute in a old-fashioned plain-Jane sort of way. Some guys like that as it seems less pretentious and more at ease with themselves.

But what do I know, I am just a redneck.

But I really do NOT like this blending of combat roles for the sexes. The SCOTUS has stated that the only reason that women cannot be subjected to the draft is because they cannot serve in all areas of the military like men can. If this no-combat line disapears, then women will be eventually subject to the draft.

And I will take my daughter to Canada before I ever let the dike brigade get that kind of authority over her.

Serious.

Suz, start a new thread.

rg, I don't really have a problem with women pilots. I just don't think they should be infantry foxhole grunts.

Ah! You're talking about the DACOWITS panel on Women in the Service. Bush didn't renew the panel when its term was up. That "one" was actually two threads, neither of which had more than four replies. I think I can find something on it, though, in the DoD links.

DACOWITS That's it! But I am sure it had more than 4 replies I can name more than five names who replied right off the top of my head. images/icons/smile.gif

DesertFox

The DoD link (second-to-last page in Patriots Forum) has several items on DACOWITS, but none about it being stopped.

Darnit, I forgot the bring the link along. I'll put it here shortly.

Well, the most recent DACOWITS item is dated 1997. Here (http://www.defenselink.mil/search97/s97is.vts)'s the link.

Nope. That doesn't work. First you have to go here (http://www.defenselink.mil/), then use the search feature at upper right on that page, for DACOWITS. Not much help, though.

I think the pairing of two females to fly a helicopter is really cute, myself.
Someone in the publick relations department of the Army is gonna get a pat on the back for this one.
I was wondering, though...what would really be good is if, GW would appoint one of these helicopter pilots to some important post. Say like heading up the CDC. No...wait...they already got their token chick.
Well, look for great things for these chopperchicks.

Suzie I think the military "chicks" are proud to serve such a fine CIC.

Suzie
07-02-2002, 08:13 PM
I am sure they are and they should be, but they can do it in a role that does not involve combat units. This has became a feminist issue that has no place in the military.
